Florida MAGA Rep. Randy Fine is facing a rather angry wave of online criticism after a homeowner’s Ring camera appeared to capture the congressman opening a stranger’s mailbox and flipping through the homeowner’s mail while campaigning in Ormond Beach. While viewers of the now-viral clip were initially skeptical, Fine’s office has confirmed that it was indeed the state representative in the video.
The incident happened on August 16, as Fine, wearing a red campaign hat and blue shirt, approached the home and apparently rang the doorbell. According to footage, Fine then looked around before opening the wall-mounted mailbox and going through the letters one by one. He did not appear to remove any mail or leave campaign material inside.
The homeowner was watching the encounter remotely through her Ring camera and contacted Ormond Beach police after seeing someone going through her mailbox. According to reports confirmed by TMZ, she ultimately decided not to press charges, meaning Fine will not face federal charges over the incident. Fine’s office also confirmed to TMZ that the person seen in the video was the congressman.
Despite the lack of legal repercussions for Fine (so far), the footage still triggered an immediate backlash online, particularly over federal restrictions surrounding mailboxes. Federal law prohibits unauthorized interference with mail receptacles, and campaigners are not permitted to use a mailbox to distribute political literature. However, the precise legal implications of briefly looking through a mailbox without taking or damaging anything depend on the circumstances and applicable statute.
Heavier fines for Rep. Fine?
This episode comes as Fine battles through a contentious Republican primary fight. Fine won a special election in 2025 to represent Florida’s 6th Congressional District after former Rep. Mike Waltz resigned to become President Donald Trump’s national security adviser. Trump has endorsed Fine, who has also attracted controversy for inflammatory remarks about Muslims and the war in Gaza.
Even so, social media users quickly focused on the mailbox footage. “Barbie this is against the law,” former Florida congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell wrote on X, responding to the video. She added that the incident should be reported and that the House should conduct an ethics investigation. Another commenter asked bluntly, “Isn’t this illegal?” while another responded, “It’s a federal crime!”
On Reddit, the reaction was similarly incredulous. “Who the [expletive] goes in somebody’s mailbox???” one user wrote. Another commenter offered a possible explanation, suggesting Fine may have been checking the name on the mail against a voter list, while acknowledging, “It is still illegal.”
The controversy has now turned an otherwise ordinary door-to-door campaign stop into another political headache for Fine, with critics questioning why a congressman would open a private mailbox, especially amid concerns of election fraud from the Republican Party.
