Hello Batwoman, bye bye Twitter.

Ruby Rose, who has recently been cast as Batwoman for DC’s ‘Arrowverse’, has left the infamous social media platform after fans complained that she didn’t meet the particular requirements needed to portray the character.

The complaints ranged from the fact that Rose wasn’t Jewish (Batwoman‘s alter-ego, Kate Kane is canonically Jewish in the comic books), that her acting abilities weren’t up to snuff and that she wasn’t an out lesbian.

The latter criticism was factually incorrect, however, since the 32-year-old actress has been an out lesbian since age 12. Her initial coming out even led to bullying and a failed suicide attempt. This has been documented in the media.

Rose even reiterated the point about her sexuality in a final tweet before leaving Twitter for good.

Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman’ come from? I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with “she’s too gay” how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that an actor/actress has been chided by the internet for not living up to expectations of a given role.

Back in 2017 when Marvel’s Iron Fist series was in the works, Finn Jones was criticised by Twitter fans for not being an Asian-American like the show’s eponymous character was in the comics.

The weight of this criticism compelled Jones to quit the platform to focus on working on the show.

Something to note is that Heath Ledger was initially ill-received upon being revealed as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. However, upon release, he was lauded by fans and critics alike for his sinister portrayal.

While Rose has deleted her Twitter account, she has still retained her Instagram. However, it appears that she has disabled the comments section, probably to block any further social media criticism.

Do you think the criticisms leveled at Rose have merit? Or do you think they are ridiculous? Maybe there’s a middle-ground? Sound off in the comments below!
