‘No Need to Be Rude! We’re Geocaching!’: New York Homeowner Says They Were Scolded After Confronting Trespassing Mother With Kids

The scavenger hunt was of utmost importance

Making sure kids have fun matters to parents, but a homeowner in rural New York says one mother was really pushing her luck with her patience. In a post on r/EntitledPeople, Catsandcoffeealways shared her encounter with a family of geocachers, who hunt for outdoor treasures at real-world locations. While working from home, OP noticed a car pull into her driveway, and out popped a mother with four children who allegedly began wandering around.

Naturally, Catsandcoffeealways walked out to see why these strangers were parked and waltzing about her property. “Oh, we’re geocaching,” was what the mom said to explain why she and her kids were there. “I said that’s great, but this is private property, and you need to move your car,” OP told her, to which the mother supposedly replied, “No need to be rude! We’re geocaching!“

Eventually, the geocaching band of trespassers left, but Catsandcoffeealways was left with a sour taste in her mouth about the whole experience. “She’s teaching the next generation to be just as entitled as she is. I am so sick of people,” OP sighed, and Reddit couldn’t agree more.

Reddit Slammed the New York Mother For Her ‘Geocaching’ Entitlement to Trespass

“’Don’t be rude!’ is the motto of rude, entitled people being called out (ever so politely) on their BS,” remarked a Redditor in the comments. “Imagine trespassing, getting called out, and acting like you’re the victim. What a terrible example to set for those kids,” added a second.

“It is the ultimate deflection,” pointed out a third. “To people like this, you setting a basic boundary is considered hostile behavior. They genuinely believe they have a right to your space.” Hundreds of others echoed the same criticism of the mother who acted as though she had a “license to trespass” because she was geocaching with her kids.

Catsandcoffeealways added that she does indeed have “no trespassing” signs posted on her property, but that didn’t seem to deter the scavenger-hunting mom from pulling and parking. Some people asked why the homeowner didn’t call the police, to which she responded, “The cops probably wouldn’t show up for several hours if they come at all. The joys of rural areas.”

One commenter claiming to be a “Premium member” of the geocaching community made a solid point that could apply to any hobby that involves exploring the outdoors. “Geocaching is only a good hobby if everyone follows the rules (including cache owners!) and doesn’t violate homeowners’ rights,” they wrote. Whether it’s chasing down a rare Shiny Pokémon or searching for treasure, trespassing is never okay, even if it’s a family activity.
