A Colorado studio cabin renter claims his landlord is trying to nickel-and-dime him over the pettiest thing: his girlfriend using the bathroom. This bathroom is especially interesting in this rental situation, since it serves as the only bathroom for three other tenants. That said, this renter said the owner said he’d have to pay an extra $10 a month or essentially $0.30 a day for letting his girlfriend use the toilet.
Relations between the renter and his landlord have been tense for a while already. In his Reddit post, MachineFree9747 says that he’s “dealt with the world’s worst landlord for 4 years.” As for this new fee for letting his girlfriend use the only shared bathroom, MachineFree says he and his girlfriend haven’t even been to the cabin in half a year.
The Colorado Renter Says His Lease Says Nothing About Guests Using the Bathroom
Not to mention, OP says his lease doesn’t mention anything about being charged for letting guests use the bathroom. “Is this even legal? Do I pay him?” MachineFree asked in irritation. He tried telling the landlord that they’ve not been at the cabin for months, to which the owner responded saying that “the other tenants said my girlfriend constantly uses the bathroom.”
While $10 a month or $0.30 a day for just his partner’s bathroom use isn’t anything compared to the $1,000 of the monthly rent, MachineFree believes it’s unreasonable. OP also added that his girlfriend is only with her on weekends, “anywhere from 6-8 days a month and not consecutively either.” Top that with the stress of dealing with the landlord for almost half a decade, and that’s why MachineFree opposes this bathroom fee so much.
“Ask for a rent reduction that reflects you, the tenant, not using the bathroom for 6 months,” suggested a Redditor. “You just signed a lease that does not have a monthly guest bathroom usage charge. You are under no obligation to pay the fee,” pointed out another.
“I’d be trying for piss rebates,” joked a third. “I’d be in there flushing repeatedly an insane number of times per day. Just because,” laughed a fourth commenter.
Mischievous advice aside, this whole situation goes to show that some people might put up with a lot for a long time if things call for it. But force someone to do something small yet petty, and pushback is almost guaranteed.
