‘We Got the Government We Voted For’: Missouri Erupts as Factory Layoffs Hit Deep-Red Trump Country

Red Loyalty Meets Factory Reality

More than 60 Missouri factory workers are reportedly headed for permanent layoffs this October, and the reaction from locals is turning into a brutal argument over a question that has haunted the state for years: why does Missouri keep voting Republican when so many residents believe Republican policies are hurting them?

As reported by IB Times, Cornerstone Building Brands has notified Missouri officials of a permanent workforce reduction at its Kearney facility, according to the original report. Technicians, forklift operators and machine operators are among those expected to lose their jobs around October 19.

The timing is politically explosive. The layoffs arrive just before November’s elections and amid criticism of President Donald Trump’s economic record, particularly his use of tariffs and the uncertainty businesses say they can create.

The Lincoln Project claimed that America has lost 75,000 manufacturing jobs since Trump returned to office, although the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data presents a more complicated national picture. Manufacturing employment was down 14,000 over the 12 months ending July 2026, while gaining 5,000 jobs that month.

Missouri’s Red-State Loyalty Comes Under Fire

For some Missouri workers posting on the Missouri subreddit, however, the anxiety feels considerably less abstract.

One manufacturing employee said overtime that once routinely pushed summer weeks toward 50 hours had disappeared. Another Missouri factory worker claimed steady work had been scarce for almost nine months.

“Really don’t like where this is heading,” one wrote.

The layoffs quickly became ammunition for Missouri liberals furious with their state’s political habits.

“We got the government we voted for,” one commenter wrote.

Another offered an even sharper diagnosis: “This state loves Democrat policies but hates Democrats.”

That frustration is rooted in Missouri’s unmistakable electoral record. Trump won the state with 58.5% of the vote in 2024, compared with Kamala Harris’s 40.1%, according to official Missouri results.

Some Reddit users argued that workers continue supporting politicians whose policies they believe undermine unions, manufacturing stability and household finances. One union worker simply asked: “I really wish I could understand how union workers support republicans.”

Others pushed back against assuming laid-off workers were necessarily Trump supporters, pointing out that living in Missouri does not establish anyone’s politics. Another commenter noted that factories are still hiring in some areas, suggesting Missouri manufacturing is not experiencing one uniform collapse.

That distinction matters. Reddit, particularly political threads, is not a scientific snapshot of Missouri voters. But the anger is revealing nonetheless. Trump promised an industrial revival built around protecting American workers. In Kearney, dozens of workers are instead preparing to leave a factory permanently.

For Missouri Republicans, the uncomfortable test this November is whether economic pain changes votes, or whether the Show-Me State once again shows that partisan loyalty can survive almost anything.
