Backlash As Dozens of Muslim Men Gather for Prayers on New York Sidewalk: ‘This Is How Takeover Looks Like’

Outrage spreads faster than facts

A prayer video out of New York is doing what viral prayer videos out of New York tend to do lately: racking up millions of views and dragging a routine Friday ritual into a much bigger fight about religion, immigration, and who gets to use a sidewalk.

Friday prayers spilling out onto the sidewalk in New York City. Scenes like this would have been almost unimaginable in America a few decades ago. The country is changing incredibly fast, and pretending people aren’t allowed to notice or question where those changes lead is… pic.twitter.com/8nHvTsMKv0

The clip, posted to X by the account @ClownWorld, shows a residential New York street lined with parked cars and trees, where dozens of men in thobes, robes, and kufis have laid out prayer rugs across the pavement.

The footage captures the group moving through the standard postures of Islamic prayer – standing, bowing, and prostrating – while a person in a high-visibility uniform passes nearby and pedestrians continue past the gathering.

The video’s exact date and cross streets haven’t been independently verified, but the scene matches a recurring pattern documented across several New York boroughs in recent years.

That pattern is mosque overflow. When a congregation outgrows its building’s capacity, worshippers spill onto the sidewalk or street rather than turn people away, a practice most common during Friday Jummah prayers in neighborhoods with large Muslim populations, like Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge and Kensington.

Internet Reacts to New York Sidewalk Prayer Video

The video sparked heated debate online, with many commenters framing the gathering as evidence of demographic and cultural change. One commenter wrote, “This is how take over looks like, soon enough these people will have more privilege then New Yorkers and those idiots who didnt vote will have to move or just face the consequences for not voting for American who was born here.”

Another argued, “Why are we allowing this. We are a Christian country and need to stay Christian. If they don’t want to assimilate, then they can go back home.” A third tied the video to partisan politics, writing that “Democrats do not care about anything but power” and accusing the party of pandering to “illegals, criminals, Somalis and Muslims.”

Others pushed back on the framing entirely, with one commenter joking that New York had simply “discovered that a city can have subway delays, street protests, food trucks AND religious gatherings … sometimes all before lunch,” while a fourth called the reaction itself performative, predicting “Americans aint gonna do *expletive*.”

The numbers complicate the “takeover” framing. Roughly 9% of New York City residents are Muslim, and the metro area’s 1.5 million Muslims are served by about 275 mosques – the most of any U.S. city, but still not enough capacity for every Friday prayer.

The city’s Department of Transportation has formally permitted mosques to close streets for overflow prayer through its Open Streets program, and similar viral clips have previously been fact-checked and found to be authentic prayer gatherings, not evidence of the “Sharia takeover” claims attached to them online.
