Monster Hunter‘s mobile spinoff might’ve borrowed plenty of familiar faces across the series’ gigantic roster. But now, the game is getting a beast it can truly call its own. During Gamescom 2026 Live, developer TiMi Studio revealed Ruger Aidal, Monster Hunter Outlanders‘ flagship — its first original monster and Elder Dragon.

Ruger Aidal was unveiled hovering above the Outlanders Adventurers, with Commander Freya confirming that the Lapua legend is indeed a monster. The Elder Dragon then surrounds itself with an intense orb of light before releasing a powerful heat wave that scorches the surrounding area. As the battle-damaged Adventurers open their eyes, Ruger Aidal has disappeared from their sight. Monster Hunter Outlanders describes Ruger Aidal as wreathed in ‘golden and iridescent light,’ resembling a ‘second sun.’

That connection to light could be important considering Monster Hunter Outlanders‘ main plot. One of Aesoland’s biggest mysteries involves strange Aurora phenomena and Radiant species. Monsters living on the island had their looks and powers altered by Radiantite, a mysterious mineral found throughout the land.

Meanwhile, the opening scene tells a legend passed down through Aesoland’s communities. It’s said that light originally gave life to the land before its source was drained, eventually leading its people to ruin. It ends by describing the appearance of ‘true sons’ before ‘the sky responded with fire.’

Nothing officially confirms that Monster Hunter Outlanders‘ intro passage is talking about Ruger Aidal. Still, a legendary Elder Dragon covered in brilliant light and capable of turning into some sort of miniature sun certainly fits the bill. Then again, considering the plots of Monster Hunter games so far, the monster could be a red herring. With another, more powerful Elder Dragon lurking behind the scenes.

Monster Hunter Outlanders is currently still running its third Closed Beta Test until an unannounced date. It’s also holding a special offline event during Gamescom, where local restaurants around Cologne are participating in the ‘Adventurers’ Feast’ event. Gamers can try their hands at the game, participate in a stamp rally, and meet with the development team. For those not attending, preregistration is now open on the App Store and Google Play.
