Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts has sparked controversy recently while endorsing fellow Democrat Ed Markey. During her speech, Pressley claimed that the pro-slavery Confederacy is still alive and well, and that’s just what the MAGA movement is right now (Make America Great Again). Because of her statement, Pressley apparently drew the ire of MAGA supporters, Republicans, and many people on social media.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley notably gave the speech during her endorsement for Ed Markey at Roxbury Community College in Roxbury, Massachusetts, on August 26. For most of the speech, Pressley showered Markey with praise and reiterated that support for her fellow Democrat candidate is crucial now, especially with the recent actions of the “far-right extremist” groups. Pressley then mentions that the anti-freedom fascist agenda “is bigger than Trump.”
“Whenever we do the work of ousting the occupant of the Oval Office, the Confederacy is still alive and well,” she mentions, adding, “That’s all MAGA is.” The Massachusetts politician stated that pro-slavery sentiments, White supremacy, and even LGBTQ hate are “not going to end with one person.” In any case, Pressley said her fellow Democrat, Markey, in particular, will stay consistent in their fight against the extremists she mentioned.
Pressley’s speech got noticed by Breitbart News on X, where they also posted a clip of her speech likening MAGA to the Confederacy, and the video is currently trending, with hundreds of comments arguing against the Massachusetts Rep.’s claims.
Republicans were quick to point out the Democratic Party’s history
Needless to say, Pressley’s comparison of MAGA to the Confederacy was not exactly well received by certain groups. One person on X argued that “The KKK was supported all these years by the Democrat party. So, do you understand now? It’s your Democrat Party who supported the KKK all these years.” Indeed, during Reconstruction, many Southern Democrats supported, cooperated with, or benefited politically from Ku Klux Klan violence,
There is also strong historical evidence that the Klan’s activities helped Democratic candidates regain political control of the South by terrorizing Republican voters. Hence, some commenters even accused Pressley of supposedly failing her history class, stating, “Democrats are the party of hate since 1828. We know this Pressley parasite failed history class.”
The important distinction, according to historians, is that the Democratic Party as an institution did not create or officially constitute the KKK. The Klan was founded by former Confederate soldiers as a separate organization. Historians specifically caution against equating the Klan itself with the Democratic Party.
Still, that didn’t deter comments such as, “What a blind fool! The Confederacy was the Democrat party.” Interestingly enough, it appears the lines have blurred in modern times as Republican Trump supporters, anti-Democratic protesters, several Republican candidates, and even staunch Trump allies have been spotted in the recent past waving the Confederate flag.
