Is it really an achievement

An image was posted to the social media platform X that features a Los Angeles, California mayor praising a newly painted crosswalk at Sunset Drive and Bates Street. However, the timeline to completion as well as the final product have raised questions online.

Commenters underneath a reply post made by Congressional Correspondent Bill Melugin show that critics were not impressed by the infrastructure project that allegedly took nine months to complete. Many other commenters collectively thought the same thing; as one person simply put it: “How many millions did that cost?”

I bad to double check to make sure this is real.

Yes, the socialist candidate for LA mayor and current member of the LA city council is taking a victory lap for painting a crosswalk over a decrepit road full of cracks. https://t.co/Er03wuTIbH

According to the original post by Councilmember Nithya Raman, she wrote that a crosswalk had been requested by the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council. Because it is currently August, that would imply that it’s taken, at minimum, nearly nine months to have the sidewalk painted.

This particular detail caught the attention of Bill Melugin, who writes in a post responding to the new crosswalk with, “I bad to double check to make sure this is real. Yes, the socialist candidate for LA mayor and current member of the LA city council is taking a victory lap for painting a crosswalk over a decrepit road full of cracks.”

In the images shown, one features the crosswalk before the paint, and the other is after. However, you can very clearly still see the cracks within the road itself, meaning that the road didn’t have its other issues tended to, just painted over. This created the conversation concerning whether doing so was even worth it.

There were a significant number of commenters who simply couldn’t understand why the project was being treated like such a significant enhancement. One person even called the situation “sad” and argued that officials appeared to proudly showcase things that their local government is expected to handle anyway.

Comments and Reactions to the California Crosswalk Project

The prevailing reaction was mockery, with commenters treating the crosswalk less like an achievement and more like an example of government moving at a snail’s pace. One person wrote, “I love how it took a “team” and “problem solving” to paint 8 lines on a road, after almost a year.“

Another viewer was equally unimpressed, writing, “Oh my. That is sad. All that money and this is the accomplishment they are waving. They don’t even hear themselves.” Others went beyond jokes about the government and raised actual concerns about the condition of the pavement and whether the crossing was genuinely accessible for disabled pedestrians.

As the post continues to go viral on social media, more and more people are leaving their opinions and frustrations in the comments section below it.
