Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is drawing mixed reactions after answering Vice President JD Vance’s warning to “keep my wife’s name the hell out of your mouth.” During an appearance on CNN’s “The Source,” El-Sayed said he would rather not talk about spouses and that his earlier remarks were about Vance’s views on who counts as American. Online users split over whether the comments targeted Second Lady Usha Vance or raised a political point.

The clip was posted Monday night on X by CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins (@kaitlancollins), who wrote that she “asked Abdul El-Sayed about Vice President Vance telling him to ‘keep my wife’s name the hell out of your mouth.’”

The footage shows a split-screen interview, with Collins in the studio and Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed appearing remotely. Asked about Vance’s warning, El-Sayed says, “I’d rather not talk about spouses at all,” and adds, “The point that I’ve been making about his wife is that he believes in a political philosophy that says that some people are somehow more American than others.”

The video does not include Vance’s rally remarks. Those comments were made separately on Monday in Sterling Heights, Michigan, where Vance said El-Sayed had a “weird habit of talking about my family” and told him, “Whatever you want to talk about, Abdul, keep my wife’s name the hell out of your mouth, because she’s way out of your league.”

According to published reports, El-Sayed had earlier written on X, “So do we think JD is taking Usha with him back in time to meet Papaw, or no…?” after Vance invoked his late grandfather. The CNN clip does not show that earlier post or what happened before or after the interview segment.

How Viewers Are Responding to the CNN Exchange

Some users praised El-Sayed’s answer. One wrote, “And what’s wrong with this response? It’s brilliant. JD Vance is a clown.”

Others called it an “amazing answer” or said, “Damn, he’s good.”

A second group said the remarks were not personal. One commenter wrote, “He didn’t ‘attack’ her,” adding that El-Sayed was making a point about what they called Vance’s “double standard” over who should be seen as a U.S. citizen. Another said, “A second lady is fair game.”

Other users were more critical. One wrote that El-Sayed “never answers a question.” Another said, “I like him, but he’s starting to get a little too bro-y with the trash talk.”

For now, the CNN clip has become part of the wider argument over the Michigan Senate race. Online users, however, remain focused on whether El-Sayed’s remarks were a personal attack on Usha Vance or a political point about Vance’s warning.
