A TikTok trend recently erupted involving the large fragrance and soap chain, Bath & Body Works. Customers learned they can return their old, gently used perfumes and soaps for cash. One Virginia woman had to get in on the trend, which is causing an uproar across TikTok and challenging what returns should be permitted.
Brittney (@howdidyouevenfind.me) is one of many TikTokers who discovered the newest Bath & Body Works trend. Many individuals have been returning old, half-used products to Bath & Body Works to receive new in-store credit. This takes advantage of the company’s incentives to ensure that customers are completely satisfied with their products and doesn’t put an age limit on many returns. Brittney specifically went in with 32 old, somewhat used items to see if she could actually return them for a buck.
In Brittney’s video, she shows the 32 items that she returned, including used fragrance sprays, body wash, and lotions. When they rang up her old items, she qualified for $330.38 in refunds. Then, the store associates had to “call corporate.” The store associate knew the items were really old and wasn’t sure if she could exchange them. In the end, Brittney said, “Corporate approved.”
Once Brittney was approved for the refund, she showed an entire basket of new products. She was able to purchase these with the money they gave her. For what Brittney didn’t spend at the store, she showed her audience that they gave her a gift card. She tells her TikTok audience that store associates took some of her old items for personal use. She said they were going to “throw them away anyway,” showing how wasteful this trend can be.
The video, like others on this topic, immediately drew reactions and criticism from TikTokers. One annoyed commenter suggested, “You just took hours away from them employees” for making associates call around on behalf of her. Another commenter stated, “Please change policy soon!! This is so trashy of people!”
Others, however, believe Brittney is taking advantage of a system that Bath & Body Works failed to change. As one commenter pointed out, “If they didn’t want people doing this, they would change the policy. The policy has been in place for decades.” Another commented, “Everyone is acting like B&BW ain’t got money to spare.” Commenters continue to share their opinions and reactions on Brittney’s video as it gains popularity.
