New York Resident Says Registering Cars Is Harder Than Transferring Medical License: ‘You Need a Permit Just to Fart’

What a hassle

Transferring one’s medical license isn’t a walk in the park, as some states require plenty of formal documentation, including another physician’s endorsement in some cases. However, Reddit user Stance Monkey says transferring his medical license was easier than registering his cars after moving to New York. The one issue giving him a real headache is getting a tinted-windows exemption sticker to pass a state inspection.

It’s been easier to transfer my medical license to NY than it has been to register my cars

In his post on r/mildlyinfuriating, Stance clarifies that his car’s tinted windows are necessary for his wife. Her eye surgery made her photosensitive, so the dark tint is needed for her to drive. Unfortunately, a signed doctor’s note isn’t enough for the application, since the sticker is what will get the vehicle registered in New York proper.

Stance added that they have 10 days to complete the inspection after registering his cars, but the sticker will take a lengthy process that will likely take longer than 10 days. The New York DMV actually says that if a person’s out-of-state inspection certificate is still valid, it can retain its validity until one year after registration begins. However, Stance hasn’t provided any details on his situation.

That said, he claims his options are now to remove the tint now, then re-tint the windows later, which will cost thousands of dollars, or he can hunt down a local shop that will pass him without the tinted-windows exemption sticker. Driving around the state without an inspection in hopes of not getting caught was also one of his ideas but would comes with its own obvious legal risks.

Redditors Comment on How Strict New York Laws Can Be

“Welcome to NY. You need a permit just to fart,” joked a Redditor in the comments, to which Stance responded, implying it was absurd that he needed a permit to keep his ADT home security system active.

“Registering a car in NY is extremely easy…..trying to get around NY laws, yeah of course it’s gonna be a pita,” remarked another user. “Good thing you don’t own guns,” added a third. For now, Stance says he’ll keep “rolling the dice” on shops, hoping one will pass an inspection.

To conclude, transferring one’s medical license is objectively more challenging in a professional sense. Still, no one can deny that the hassle and a half OP is enduring just to keep his tinted windows for his wife in New York is a stressful ordeal.
