A woman in Illinois is facing online criticism after refusing to pay for food she ordered because she did not like it.
The woman and a man accompanying her stood in front of the restaurant manager as she filmed their confrontation. The manager was holding two plates of food that appeared to be the dishes the woman had complained about. The video began with the manager telling them that there was nothing wrong with the food. “I don’t want it,” the woman simply responded.
The woman then revealed that the restaurant was Uptown Grill. She proceeded to accuse the manager of trying to make her pay for food she did not like. “I’m not paying,” she said. She then claimed that everyone else had received their orders, but hers was not prepared to her liking. The manager then looked at the man accompanying the woman with what appeared to be disbelief.
The manager spoke calmly with the man, but the woman then interrupted. She told him, “Take it off the bill,” referring to the food she had returned. The man then told the manager that she was not going to pay for it. “I’m not,” she agreed. The manager responded, “But you ordered it.”
“I don’t like it, and you can’t make me pay for something that I don’t like,” the woman told the manager. She continued raising her voice, insisting that no one had ever told her she had to pay for something she did not like. “You gonna take it off the bill and I’m not paying for it. Period,” she added. “Take it off,” she continued.
“Ma’am, there is nothing wrong with the food,” the manager told her. The woman responded, “How you gonna tell me what I don’t like?.” The video ended with her beginning to leave. She then said that if she saw the food added to her bill, she still would not pay for it. It is unclear what happened after that.
Generally, a customer’s personal dislike of a meal does not automatically mean they can refuse to pay after ordering and receiving it. However, if there is a genuine problem with the food, such as it being undercooked, spoiled, contaminated, or substantially different from what was advertised, a customer may have stronger grounds to request a replacement or refund.
With no clear indication in the video that the food was defective, the dispute appeared to come down to whether the restaurant would agree to remove the returned dishes from the bill. In such situations, customers and restaurant staff would typically need to work out a resolution rather than one side unilaterally deciding whether payment is required.
Viewers Slam Illinois Woman Over Refusing to Pay for Food
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers criticized the Illinois woman over her refusal to pay for the food. Some argued that the restaurant should have banned her. “Take it off the BILL take her picture and trespass her. It’s a small price to pay for a better clientele,” one person wrote. Another commenter suggested involving law enforcement, writing, “Call the police. Force them to pay and have them trespassed. Bonus if they refuse and get defiant with the cops and get charges that ends up becoming a great bodycam YouTube vid.”
More viewers continued criticizing the woman, with some suggesting that other restaurants in the area should be warned about her. “OMG. Take a picture of her and send it to all the restaurants in the city so they can refuse to serve her,” one person wrote. Another commenter focused on involving law enforcement.“We need the faces of the ppl recording that is the most important. And when this nonsense starts call the cops for theft of services. Man works too hard to put up with this nonsense,” they said.
In the end, the dispute came down to a pretty simple question: if a restaurant prepares what you ordered and you simply don’t like it, should that mean you don’t have to pay? Judging by the reaction online, plenty of viewers felt the answer was an obvious no, with some even arguing the restaurant would be better off refusing to serve the woman again.
