While Onimusha: Way of the Sword tends to hand every objective and most collectibles on a silver platter, there are still a few puzzles you need to solve, such as the one with the masks down in the Underground Laboratory. Since it can be a bit of a brain teaser, despite the Oni Lady and Musashi throwing clues your way, here we have a quick guide on how to solve this puzzle.
How to Solve the Mask Puzzle in Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Since this isn’t an optional puzzle, the main quest will lead you to the masks in the Underground Laboratory. However, it may seem a bit, dare we say, puzzling, especially since the game doesn’t have as many puzzles. In any case, you’ll arrive at a wall with some hanging masks, which look like a contraption. If you look closely at the wall outside of the room, you’ll see light coming from behind the masks, creating a shadow of the masks themselves on the ground.
This is the important part of the mask puzzle in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. As you can see, the shadows let some light pass, and those illuminated parts show the order in which you need to shoot the mask. For a clearer example, we’ve marked the order below.
After shooting the masks, the contraption will open, giving you the Unsettling Mask item, which you can then use to open the previous door. Again, the game will take you there through the markers, so there is no way you can get lost.
Once you open that door, you’ll have to prepare for a few more enemy gauntlets and one mini-boss fight. Yet, after that, the path to the final boss of this area should be pretty straightforward.
