‘You Voted to Deny Healthcare for 9/11 First Responders’: Michigan Senate Candidate Mike Rogers Faces Fierce Backlash After Attacking Rival Abdul El-Sayed

Talk about backfiring spectacularly.

Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers attacked rival Abdul El-Sayed over patriotism, Palestine and alleged ties to extremists. He accused El-Sayed of surrounding himself with people who “despise America” and questioned his fitness for the Senate. The remarks intensified Rogers’ criticism of his rival in Michigan’s Senate race.

He’s a conman. I’m a lawman.

He wants to apologize for America. I want to defend America.

The video centered on Rogers’ argument that El-Sayed would not put Michigan or the United States first. That contrast became explicit when Rogers said, “He wants to represent Palestine, I want to represent Michigan.”

He also called El-Sayed a “con man” and described himself as “a law man.” The attack continued with Rogers saying El-Sayed wanted to “apologize for America,” while he wanted to defend it.

Rogers then shifted to terrorism, saying senators should not search for excuses when Americans face threats. He said the country instead needed a senator “hunting” radical Islamic terrorists.

The attack quickly shifted attention toward Rogers’ own record and whether his criticism of El-Sayed would resonate with Michigan voters.

“You voted to deny healthcare for 9/11 first responders. Twice,” one user wrote. “You should be ashamed of yourself.” Another turned Rogers’ own attack back on him: “The con man is you. Your legislative record on opioids caused real harm in Michigan.”

Others questioned Rogers’ connection to the state. “You left Michigan dude. You couldn’t care less about Michiganders!” one response stated. Another wrote, “Only a CONMAN runs from debates and stick to spewing lies on stage alone.”

Rogers’ claim that El-Sayed wanted to represent Palestine also drew a direct reversal. “You want to represent Israel. He wants to represent MICHIGAN!!!” one user wrote.

Some responses backed Rogers. “Michigan stands w/ @mikerogersformi. The commie can deport himself immediately,” one user wrote. Another simply stated, “We’re with you, Mike!”

The clash leaves Michigan’s Senate race increasingly centered on patriotism, loyalty and each candidate’s record. Whether that framing helps Rogers remains unresolved.
