Georgia Rep. Buddy Carter Faces Backlash After Defending Trump’s $5,000 Checks Despite Criticizing Biden’s $1,400 Payments: ‘Make It Make Sense!’

Different president, different standard?

Georgia Rep. Buddy Carter defended President Donald Trump’s proposed $5,000 checks despite previously criticizing Biden-era stimulus payments as inflationary. He argued the larger payments would stimulate the economy and help Americans struggling financially. CNN repeatedly pressed him to explain why his position had changed. Carter insisted the two situations were “apples and oranges.”

CNN pointed to Carter’s 2022 criticism of $1,400 checks under President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan. It also noted his PAID Act sought to direct leftover pandemic funds toward the national debt.

Carter blamed the pandemic response on Democrats and Fauci, saying they “pulled the wool over our eyes.” He maintained Trump’s proposal was different because Americans currently needed more money in their pockets.

The interviewer then asked whether Carter supported the plan because Trump was a Republican. Carter rejected that suggestion and acknowledged the nation’s $40 trillion debt. He argued that “people are hurting” and said the payments could help stimulate the economy.

The host returned to Carter’s earlier argument that direct payments contributed to inflation under Biden. Carter again defended Trump’s proposal as stimulus and said the economy needed it.

Pressed on whether $5,000 checks could also fuel inflation, Carter said Republicans had inflation “under control.” He argued the Federal Reserve should instead lower interest rates. The interviewer closed by noting wholesale inflation was up at the latest check.

The exchange quickly became a debate over whether Carter was applying different fiscal standards to similar direct payments.

“That answer dodges the question,” one user wrote. “The issue isn’t the label you put on the checks. It’s why the fiscal principle you defended in 2022 suddenly has an exception now.” Another wrote, “He can’t even defend the bs he’s saying. They did the same with $1400 but now you saying that $5000 is better than what Biden did.”

Others focused on the fiscal argument itself. “What. A. Joke. These guys really put the CON in conservative. Goes against every fiscally responsible principle they allegedly care about,” one response stated. Another questioned why stimulus was needed at all: “Why does the economy need a stimulus. Based on the president, ‘It is the best economy ever.’ Make it make sense!”

Some users rejected the comparison between the two payments. “So Mr Sanchez doesn’t know the difference between a ‘stimulus’ and a dividend. What network employs him?” one wrote. Another argued, “$1,400 of printed money is inflationary when $5,000 of dividends from foreign investments is not! Dems have offered free $ every election cycle, they’re just mad Trump is taking away their schtick!”

The interview ultimately left unresolved whether the larger payments could add to inflationary pressure, with Carter maintaining they would instead help stimulate the economy. For Americans receiving a $5,000 check, the immediate benefit would obviously be difficult to ignore, but the longer-term question is whether that extra money could eventually be felt elsewhere through higher prices.
