A New Jersey man has turned an unusual hobby into a lifeline for families searching for their missing pets. Armed with a fleet of 18 drones, including models equipped with thermal imaging technology, 64-year-old Michael Parziale has helped locate more than 120 lost animals across the state.
Known as the “Drone Ranger,” Parziale uses the technology to search areas that would otherwise be difficult to cover on foot, spotting animals from above and helping reunite them with their worried owners. His efforts have included searches for dogs and cats, along with at least one rather unexpected runaway: a cow.
According to reporting on Parziale and his work, his U.S.A.R. Drone Team has grown into a much larger operation than simply flying drones in his spare time. The nonprofit also works with military veterans, helping train them in drone technology and skills that can potentially be used in other industries.
One rescue in particular shows just how effective the technology can be. After a five-month-old puppy named Shade went missing in South Jersey on a freezing February night, her family spent more than a day searching without success. Parziale was eventually called in, and after launching his thermal-equipped drone, he managed to locate the missing puppy in just 41 minutes.
Shade was eventually found curled up in a wooded area, cold but safe, bringing an exhausting search to a happy end for her family. It’s the kind of outcome Parziale has now helped deliver time and again across New Jersey, with his drones locating everything from missing dogs and cats to, rather unexpectedly, a runaway cow.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with several commenters praising Parziale for using his skills to help families during what can be an incredibly stressful experience. One person shared their own experience of losing a pet, writing, “I lost my dog for 9 days, we found her through many hours of detective work. This guy is a hero. It’s so painful to feel like you’ve let your pet down.” Another simply cheered, “Let’s hear it for this hero!”
Parziale’s work even appears to have inspired others to get involved. One Reddit user revealed, “I just reached out to him on Facebook. I am a pilot and I’d like to get involved since this is such a good cause.” Meanwhile, the New Jersey resident who shared the story admitted, “I’m usually pretty jaded about feel-good bait but this dude rocks!”
