‘He Never Answered the Question’: Vivek Ramaswamy’s ‘You Look Like a Plant’ Jab at Ohio Town Hall Sparks Backlash

Plant or pivot?

Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican nominee for Ohio governor, told a front-row questioner at a Marietta town hall on Friday that he looked “like a plant” after being asked how Ohioans could trust “a jet-setting billionaire who promoted a failed Alzheimer’s drug.” He then discussed his record and called on Democrat Amy Acton to debate. The C-SPAN clip spread online, where users split over whether he answered the question or sidestepped it.

👏🏼THIS👏🏼 is why Vivek is built different.

A planted question from the front row:

“How can Ohioans trust a jet-setting billionaire who promoted a failed Alzheimer’s drug?” 🙄

Vivek doesn’t dodge it. He looks at the guy and says, “You look like a plant, so I wanted to make sure…

The footage shows Vivek Ramaswamy and his wife, Apoorva Ramaswamy, on stage before an audience. A man in the front row asks, “How can Ohioans trust a jet-setting billionaire who promoted a failed Alzheimer’s drug to govern in their best interest?” Ramaswamy replies, “Thank you. I appreciate it. You look like a plant, so I wanted to make sure I gave you a question.”

He then says his opponent’s “allies, I think, had you come here,” adds that his campaign will “take any question, including ones that are based on really, I would say, defamatory, libelous lies,” and challenges Democrat Amy Acton “to show up on a debate stage.” After Apoorva asks, “Vivek, mind if I take this one?”

He continues: “I was not born a billionaire. I was not born a millionaire. I was not born an ‘anything air.’ I was born an heir to nothing.” The clip does not identify the questioner or show what happened before he was called on. No independent source has confirmed whether Acton’s allies sent the man.

Split Takes on a Front-Row Clash in Ohio

According to his supporters, Ramaswamy did what a candidate is supposed to do: take the question in public. The Ohio Republican Party called the video clip “exactly how candidates should interact with voters” and said he is “the candidate in the arena,” while Acton “is nowhere to be found.”

One user wrote, “He doesn’t half-*expletive* the questions. He answers them.” Another said, “Vivek isn’t afraid of actual dialogue.”

An Ohio voter added, “I will choose this over the spectacle of Amy Acton.”

Critics stayed on the original charge and the “plant” remark. “He also never answered the question; he just pivoted,” one wrote.

Another said, “That was a valid question.” A third asked, “So anyone who asks an intelligent question is a plant?”

Others were more skeptical of the setup itself: “Or perhaps it’s because Vivek planted him.”

The clip is now part of the Ohio governor’s race. That fight was already about debates, transparency, and who would take a hard question. Some people say this is an unscripted town hall. Others say he still didn’t answer the charge.
