As someone who started his World of Warcraft journey at the end of WotLK, I always felt a bit sad that I wasn’t part of the initial assault on the Wrathgate or when the Argent Tournament started. While Blizzard has let me experience that again with its Classic versions, it doesn’t feel the same. In the end, the story is already out there. Regardless of how many times we go back in time, those tales remain unchanged. But that is about to change with World of Warcraft: Forever. Beyond being the best approach to a Classic Plus experience, it is also the best way to experience that old-school Azeroth feel with countless untold stories for new and veteran adventurers alike.
World of Warcraft: Forever Is Much Bigger Than We Expected
In case you somehow missed the announcement, Blizzard unveiled World of Warcraft: Forever, which, in simple terms, could be seen as the Classic Plus version we all wanted. However, I think that would be selling it short, especially given the scope of this new endeavor and what it aims to achieve.
WoW: Forever takes place at the beginning of World of Warcraft, but it seems it will take a different path from the one we saw in 2004 and afterward as we moved toward Outland and so on. Here, it’s all about adventuring in Azeroth, with this colorful yet dangerous world being at the center of it all.
There won’t be flying mounts, no impending Burning Legion invasion (at least for now, and judged by what the developers said), and no other pressing world-ending threat—it’s just us as adventurers against the untamed land we all remember. And frankly, that is the perfect approach.
As I said above, many missed their chance to be part of some of the most iconic WoW moments. And yes, many of us are thankful for having had the chance to relive them through the many Classic servers. But it just isn’t the same. That sense of discovery isn’t as present. The strategies, the class builds, and quest guides are already out there. We’re going through the eras for some well-deserved nostalgia rush, but that, pardon my pun, “wow factor,” fades after realizing everything exists in this 20-year-old timeline.
So, Blizzard decided to do what many of us weren’t expecting and blend the old-school feel and world with many, emphasis on many, new additions that will make World of Warcraft: Forever the new permanent home of many adventurers.
Time to Start Anew
After the announcement, there was some confusion about whether World of Warcraft: Forever would be another Season of Discovery, another Classic release with a few added things, or something else. Well, it seems it was a combination of many of the things the community had been asking for ever since Classic got back on the table.
While we will all start again in the 2004 World of Warcraft we remember, there are new zones, a brand-new race, new race-and-class combos, and some expanded zones. The website also teases over 1,000 new quests, but most importantly: no world-ending threats.
That last part might seem strange to many, as we’ve been used to saving the world more than once. Still, many of us just crave that adventuring feel of grabbing a quest, looking for an item drop, and struggling to pull more than two mobs at a time. That is exactly what WoW: Forever is going for.
But since this is a reimagining, many new things are coming along for the ride. We already saw some of the new raids and dungeons, as well as the brand-new zones that, as the developers put it, were hidden in plain sight and unexplored in the larger narrative.
At first, all of these things might seem like they cater to the Classic community, but that’s not the case. See, Blizzard has also looked for ways to combine the best of, here goes a pun again, both World(s) of Warcraft, or in other words, Classic and Retail. There will be a toggle between the old-school and HD models, new lighting to all zones without taking away the WoW feel, and all the iconic classes, albeit with new mechanics and adjustments. You can even choose to opt in for transmog and see others with their fancy outfits or stick to that kaleidoscope adventuring garb we all have for the first 15 levels.
As you can see, this isn’t just a way to keep the old-school community happy; it is a way to bridge all generations into one new experience. On top of that, and as the name implies, this new version works with the “Forever” motto. Progression seems to take a horizontal approach. No levels going beyond the 100-mark, no stat squish (at least for now), and no benching your hard-earned gear just to replace it with a green-quality armor set in the new update’s first zone. It will all remain there.
Welcome Back, Azeroth

Out of all the announcements during this BlizzCon 2026, I have to admit that WoW: Forever was my favorite. The one game that made me the, well, gamer that I am today was WoW. And while I still play it on and off, the retail version has become a bit too fast and too endgame-focused, so the journey feels more like a background thing. Classic, on the other hand, lacks that first-time sense of discovery, and while I’m still trying to complete a Hardcore run to 60, the adventure is known by many already.
World of Warcraft: Forever is exactly what I wanted, and what I bet many players wanted. To don that dusty tabard again, grab as many quests as possible, and just jog into the next area to see everything Azeroth has to offer. Fortunately, we’ll all be able to jump into one of gaming’s most beloved worlds, albeit with a new literal and figurative light, for a brand-new adventure where the world and what we do in it are all that matters.
