New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has recently announced plans to sue the Donald Trump administration over changes to how federal authorities can deny visas to some immigrants. The announcement did not sit well with some people online, however, who accused the New York politician of defending immigrants over the well-being of Americans.
As reported by Fox News, the lawsuit was jointly filed with NY Attorney General Letitia James. The lawsuit, which is planned by a coalition including Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County and King County, stands in opposition to the Trump administration’s plans to allow the government to deny visa applications based on how likely immigrants are to require public benefits.
Under this new rule, officers would use a less rigid framework to evaluate whether a person should get a green card. Participation in programs such as Medicaid, food stamps, and housing assistance could negatively impact applications.
The announcement was shared by right-wing media profiles such as Eric Daugherty, attracting even more attention on social media. In the video, Mamdani called the plan “an undisguised effort to strip New Yorkers of the services they rely on,” and claimed that the law is “intentionally vague as a means of creating uncertainty and fear.”
Internet Reacts to Zohran Mamdani’s Announcement
On X, most users were very aggressive toward Mamdani’s position, criticizing him: “Parasite wants more parasites. The host will be dead, then what will they do?” Someone else said: “Yeah, why would we want instant welfare citizens? Mentally ill liberals only care about anyone but actual US citizens.”
The question of whether Americans should use taxes to pay for benefits to legal immigrants was one of the main reasons for the backlash: “Yes, that is the way it should be: immigrants should be able to support themselves in order to stay here. That USED to always be a requirement in the immigration statutes.”
Others said: “If they’re going through the process to be a legal permanent resident they aren’t supposed to be a public charge.”
Many believed that the lawsuit did not stand a chance, however: “I have a feeling Mamdani will lose this fight…BIGLY!”
It remains to be seen whether the lawsuit will be successful, but until this is decided in court, the new rules start to apply on September 18, 2026.
