‘So Schneiderman’s Is Safe’: Minnesota Locals Dunk on JD Vance After Canceling Minnesota Visit

A meme that never gets old

Vice President JD Vance has canceled a planned trip to St. Cloud, Minnesota, where he was expected to appear as part of the Trump administration’s latest push on fraud. Officials confirmed the cancellation Thursday, but no reason was given, leaving locals to fill the vacuum themselves. On Minnesota’s left-leaning Reddit community, that did not take long.

“Good. Stay out of MN,” one commenter wrote, while another responded with mock devastation: “Heart. Broken. (/s).” A third offered the line that best captured the thread’s particular blend of local humor and political disdain: “So Schneiderman’s is safe.”

St. Cloud Mayor Jake Anderson said Vance would no longer be making the trip, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office also confirmed the visit had been called off. The White House had announced the appearance earlier Thursday as part of its “War on Fraud,” though specific details about what Vance planned to announce had not been released.

Instead of getting another administration event on fraud, Minnesota got a cancellation and, almost immediately, a pile-on.

The Furniture Joke Was Very Minnesota

The Schneiderman’s gag needs a little context for those not in the know. The Minnesota furniture retailer comment was a local spin on the long-running internet meme about Vance and a couch. That meme originated from a fabricated claim about his memoir and was never true, but it has followed him so persistently online that simply mentioning furniture is enough to make the reference obvious to political internet regulars.

So the meaning was clear: Vance was staying away, and Minnesota’s couches could relax.

It’s silly, sure, but it also fit the wider reaction. The thread was overwhelmingly hostile toward Vance, Trump, and Republicans generally, with commenters using the cancellation to vent about GOP politics and speculate about why Republican appearances had been disappearing so close to Election Day.

Some suggested the party could be shifting resources away from races it sees as unwinnable. Others simply argued that Vance campaigning in Minnesota would probably do Republicans more harm than good. None of those theories were confirmed in the original report, and officials had not publicly explained why the St. Cloud visit was scrapped.

That did not stop locals from enjoying the moment. Vance was supposed to come to Minnesota talking about fraud. Instead, his cancellation handed critics a much easier story: one where the vice president never arrived, Republicans took another beating in the comments, and a Minnesota furniture store somehow escaped with the best punchline of the night.

For Vance’s critics, good riddance appeared to be the prevailing mood. And thankfully for Schneiderman’s, it was business as usual.
