Black Oregon Farmer Rips White Growers Over Subsidy Complaints: ‘Daddy Government, Come Save Me’

Bootstraps bite back in Oregon

An Oregon Black farmer has delivered a blistering message to white farmers complaining about disappearing government support and financial pressure: stop whining and start pulling those famous bootstraps.

Dion Mac, a farmer and online creator who frequently discusses Black American history and politics, aimed at struggling white farmers in a video that quickly sparked a huge reaction on Reddit.

Mac argued that Black farmers have spent generations trying to survive despite enormous historical disadvantages, while white farmers benefited from opportunities and government assistance their Black counterparts were routinely denied.

Black Farmer Message for White Farmers: “Pull Yourself Up by Your Bootstraps”

“Your people have had centuries of a head start on Black farmers,” Mac said, before mocking farmers now pleading for government help as their businesses struggle.

His central point was deliberately provocative. After generations of Black Americans hearing lectures about self-reliance, Mac suggested white farmers facing hardship should follow the same advice.

“Stop crying. Stop complaining,” was the unmistakable thrust of his message.

There is documented history behind part of Mac’s argument. The USDA has acknowledged decades of discrimination against Black farmers in federal lending and assistance programs, including cases that eventually produced the landmark Pigford settlements.

Internet Says the Bootstraps Have Come Back Around

Over on Reddit, users piled onto the irony.

“That’s the hypocrisy,” one commenter wrote. “‘Bootstraps’ when someone else is struggling, but suddenly it’s ‘where’s our help and bailout?’ when the struggle reaches your doorstep.”

Another added: “These folks want to complain about welfare when they’re receiving it.”

The thread attracted thousands of votes, with commenters repeatedly returning to Mac’s central theme: people who previously preached economic self-sufficiency suddenly sound very different when government assistance affecting their own livelihoods disappears.

Not everyone embraced the sweeping political assumptions surrounding the argument. In another discussion about struggling farmers, one commenter warned against assuming every white farmer supported Donald Trump, noting that farmers do not all vote or think alike.

That distinction matters, but it has done little to blunt the appeal of Mac’s message online.

His video lands because it turns an old American political slogan back on the people stereotypically associated with using it. The question hanging over the argument is not whether farmers deserve help. It is whether attitudes toward government assistance change when the person needing that help suddenly looks a lot more familiar.
