Times must be desperate when a store locks up its ice cream, which is exactly what happened at a Walmart in Anchorage, Alaska. Reddit user The Trash Bear said he was buying a cold sweet treat for his sick wife when he was stunned by what he saw in the frozen section. All the Häagen-Dazs flavors were locked up, so staff would have to open them for customers.
The bizarre thing Trash Bear noticed was that no other ice cream brands were locked up. “All other brands of ice cream in varied sizes (some more expensive than Häagen-Dazs) were free to grab without needing an employee to get this stupid container off,” he remarked. In other words, the price of the ice cream wasn’t an issue; Walmart was specifically locking the Häagen-Dazs in secure containers.
Redditors Assume Something Must Have Happened to Just That Brand of Ice Cream
Reddit had a variety of theories, with one of the top being that pranksters were probably tampering with the ice cream before putting it back into the freezer. “You know what, after seeing randos lick or bite the ice-cream and put it back, I support this,” remarked a commenter.
“Haagen-Dazs has a seal that you can tell if your ice cream was tampered with. This isn’t about tampering; it’s about theft,” added another Redditor. One person claiming to have worked at Walmart says a particular incident must have happened to cause management to lock up this brand specifically. They recalled how a random customer came into their former store and stole a cart of Dove bodywash. The manager locked up that bodywash brand since.
While Trash Bear doesn’t have proof that something did occur to the Häagen-Dazs, he does have a strong theory. “And as many have pointed out in the comments, this decision to lock out this specific brand was likely due to the giant band of homeless folks who hang out on the sidewalk outside,” he wrote.
At a Walmart that allegedly has armed security, it’s no wonder ice cream now has to be locked inside secured containers.
