It’s not every day that an entire state gets judged on how much its residents swear, but apparently that’s something we’re ranking now. Arizona has officially been named America’s least foul-mouthed state, and in a wonderfully ironic twist, locals wasted little time responding with some rather colorful language of their own.
As first reported by Phoenix Relocation News, a new study from Playfame analyzed posts and comments from every state subreddit to see where people were dropping the most — and the fewest — curse words. Arizona came out as the cleanest of the bunch, earning the lowest “rudeness score” in the country at just 2.63 out of 10.
Arizona wasn’t just slightly more restrained than the competition, either. The state found itself at the very bottom of the profanity rankings, suggesting Arizonans are considerably less likely to reach for a four-letter word online than people elsewhere in the country. Of course, once locals actually heard about their surprisingly clean reputation, some seemed determined to do something about it.
Arizona Locals Try To Set the Record Straight
The irony of the ranking certainly wasn’t lost on Arizona residents. Reacting on Reddit, one person offered the remarkably restrained insult, “You son of a biscuit eating bull dog,” while another joked that the discussion itself had already done some damage to the state’s clean reputation: “This post single handedly raised AZ to the top!” Someone else blamed the state’s famously brutal temperatures, writing, “Sometimes it’s too hot to curse. The heat curses for us lol.”
Others, meanwhile, seemed determined to personally improve Arizona’s standing. One commenter admitted, “I’ve designated my office at work the swear room, but clearly I’m not [expletive] doing enough here.” Another was even more concerned about Arizona falling behind the competition, declaring, “[Expletive], we need to catch the [expletive] up.”
In the end, Arizona may officially have some of the cleanest language in the country, but locals certainly had fun putting that reputation to the test. If nothing else, the ranking gave Arizonans something to laugh about together — even if a few [expletives] were required along the way.
