While plenty of religious people hold fast to the belief that ‘Jesus is watching,’ some forget that sometimes someone other than God might be surveilling them. This became the case for a man staying overnight with family in Ohio, who thought he had privacy while browsing the internet. Unfortunately for him, his nephew had security monitoring for the router.
Reddit user BeastOBurdens explained that he has NETGEAR Armor for his internet, which will notify him of phishing attempt warnings. His uncle, who was staying over at his guest house, a property he owns and lets his mother live at, wasn’t aware of the internet protection in place and allegedly went to town. At first, OP thought it was his work computer, but lo and behold, it was not.
“It is my ultra-conservative, holier-than-thou self-righteous, fair weather Catholic-until-Jesus’-teachings-don’t-support-being-a-[expletive] uncle in the guest room watching porn,” BeastOBurdens explained. “Like… use a VPN and/or a privacy-enabled browser? Please?” he remarked. Plenty of Redditors found the situation comically ironic, while others felt second-hand shame for the uncle.
“Can’t wait for your future arguments knowing you have this in your back pocket,” wrote a user. “He’s looking up holy things alright,” joked a second. “Fake Christians be the biggest hypocrites and it’s hilarious,” laughed a third.
OP Said He Wouldn’t Be Confront His Uncle Over Browsing Adult Sites
Some commenters wondered whether BeastOBurdens would confront his uncle about the adult-site notifications, to which he replied, “Or, and hear me out, I don’t talk to him about it ever?” For anyone accusing OP of being nosy about watching his family members, he clarified that he only knew about the incident because of the NETGEAR notifications. His uncle was also “only staying until like 9 am” after staying overnight.
Still, a small handful of commenters felt like it wasn’t BeastOBurdens’ business to put his family member on blast online. “Why are you putting your uncle on blast and bringing up his religious and political views? Because he looked at porn?” questioned one person. “Everyone is on your side but man it is so messed to intrude on people’s privacy in this way,” sighed another.
As a final clarification, OP concluded that he’s trying to keep his network safe, especially since he has children. As for his NETGEAR warning, his uncle could have easily gotten around this. “It’s a notification for blocked phishing attempts, not adult site visits—an ad blocker or VPN would’ve prevented this, BeastOBurdens concluded.
