While it’s hard to fault someone for acting up after a stressful divorce, one mother in Georgia allegedly decided her feelings were more important than her relationship with her son. Reddit user Err404-unknown-user, who claims to be the son, explained in his post on r/legaladvice that his mother was withholding his personal firearms from him. These weren’t just random guns, but things his late grandfather gave him, not to mention they held memories of hunting with his dad.
According to Err404, his mom changed the locks on the house and filed for divorce and a protection order while his dad was out of town on business. He had guns inside a locked safe that he asked her to hand over, to which she aggressively refused. “Nothing in this home is yours, you’re trying to steal from me and take what was my fathers, how dare you,” was her response.
While Err404 says his mother doesn’t know the safe combination to get to his guns, he wasn’t going to let her get away with keeping them illegally. They weren’t hers, as his late grandfather allegedly signed them over to him in his will. “I will file for stolen firearms; that’s a serious felony, Mom,” the son warns her. “If you force it to go this far, I will pursue charges.”
Redditors were on board with the legal threat; after all, police take stolen firearms very seriously. “Let her know to either return them to you or you’ll be filing a police report for stolen firearms,” recommended a commenter. “This isn’t like a pair of socks you like that she’s being stubborn over, these are registered firearms (and some variations you mentioned, too),” added another.
Getting the Firearms from the Mother Would Came at a Cost for the Son
Some people warn Err404 that his relationship with his mom wouldn’t be the same if he filed a report over his stolen firearms. “Tbh the relationship has already changed after she seized my stuff that she blatantly knows is mine,” he wrote in response.
Luckily for Err404, the mother caved in and handed over the guns after the police showed up at her door. OP got his firearms back but at the cost of a relationship with his mom. Though she shouldn’t have been in deliberate possession of guns that weren’t hers in the first place.
