A Washington man hired a drummer to follow a Christian street preacher around and annoy him by playing the drums during his preaching.
The man shared a video showing the preacher standing on the street holding religious signs, including one that read, “Prepare to meet thy God.” Nearby, the paid drummer stood with a rainbow-colored marching bass drum featuring the words “Black Lives Matter.”
As the video continued, the preacher spoke into a microphone and walked from one spot to another, with the drummer following him and continuing to play. Some people in the crowd appeared to enjoy the performance, with a few even dancing to the beat.
The drummer continued playing as he walked alongside the preacher, who tried to ignore him. Near the end of the video, a bystander stood in front of the preacher and raised both middle fingers while he continued speaking.
The stunt had apparently been weeks in the making. In a September post, the man asked whether he could hire a drummer to follow the preacher near games and play whenever he began speaking. He said he was ‘99% serious’ about the idea and willing to spend $100 on the experiment
After following through, the man suggested taking it a step further by launching a crowdfunding campaign to hire more musicians to follow the preacher and play near him. “I have a half baked idea of making this a regular thing through crowdfunding. If people would donate a little money into a fund, I would collect it and pay musicians to follow this guy around for 1-2 hours before games/events. Any unused funds would be donated to a relatable cause or refunded to the original donator. I would make it as transparent as possible with receipts and statements. If you would support this fund, upvote/comment on this to help me gauge interest,” he wrote. It remains unclear whether he will move forward with the idea.
Viewers Praise Washington Man for Paying Drummer
Many viewers praised the Washington man for hiring the drummer, arguing that the preacher deserved to be annoyed in return. “Is there a go fund me for this cause? I’ll support,” one person wrote. Another commenter supported the idea of crowdfunding, saying, “Can we crowd fund this and just make sure this drummer is employed full time to do this?”
Other viewers kept supporting the man’s actions, with one person suggesting a different instrument for the next encounter. “Amazing. Next time do bagpipes!” they wrote. Others criticized the preacher’s approach, with one commenter questioning why someone would publicly preach through a loudspeaker, saying, “I don’t think I could ever understand what could compell someone to go out in public with a bull horn, with huge religious signs and preach as if the people around them are actually listening. What a waste to time/life.”
The response was overwhelmingly supportive of the stunt, with several commenters volunteering to contribute money or suggesting everything from bagpipes to an entire drumline for a future encounter.
