‘Making Life as Unaffordable as Possible’: Michigan Residents Furious as Consumers Energy Eyes Another Rate Hike

Adding fuel to the fire

Michigan residents are growing fed up with utility company Consumers Energy after it revealed plans to seek yet another natural gas rate increase, just days after getting approval for a $139 million hike. With household bills already putting a strain on wallets, the prospect of another increase has struck a nerve, leaving some residents wondering when enough will be enough.

As reported by WLNS, Consumers Energy filed a notice on October 19 announcing its intention to seek another natural gas rate increase, with a formal request expected by the end of the year. This came just four days after the Michigan Public Service Commission approved a $139.2 million increase. The amount of the newly proposed increase has yet to be revealed.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has also weighed in, criticizing the timing of the announcement and pledging to intervene in the latest rate case. Nessel pointed out that the utility company is already looking ahead to another increase before customers have even started paying the newly approved rates. Consumers Energy, meanwhile, has defended its approach, arguing that smaller, more frequent rate requests help prevent much larger increases from building up over time.

Specifically, the approved increase will see typical residential customers paying an extra $3.92 per month, or around $47 annually, starting November 1. While that might not sound like a huge amount on its own, every extra dollar counts for Michigan families already juggling rising grocery bills, heating costs, and other everyday expenses. And with another rate hike potentially on the horizon, the financial pressure could continue to mount.

Michigan Residents Slam Consumers Energy Over Yet Another Rate Hike

The news certainly hasn’t gone down well with Michigan residents, many of whom have taken to Reddit to voice their frustration. One commenter sarcastically remarked, “Gotta maximize shareholder value by making life as unaffordable as possible for their unwilling customers.” Another was considerably more blunt, writing, “Evil, just pure unadulterated evil.” Meanwhile, a third took aim at the company’s service, adding, “We know you’re all suffering so let’s make it worse. Don’t expect service to get any better either.”

Others questioned the seemingly endless cycle of rate increases and whether regulators are doing enough to keep them in check. “It’s become a game at this point,” argued one user, suggesting that Consumers Energy deliberately requests more than it expects to receive before returning for another increase the following year. Another commenter shared a similar concern about the cumulative financial impact, writing, “what’s crazy is that the hikes that do get approved help them get future increases, it’s like compounding interest on our utility bills.”
