Michigan gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson criticized President Donald Trump’s economic policies ahead of his Sunday visit to the state. She blamed his tariffs on Canada and the war in Iran for rising costs in Michigan. Social media users criticized her remarks and questioned the state’s Democratic leadership.
In a video shared on X, Benson welcomed Trump’s visit while demanding answers about his policies. She argued that his tariffs on Canada had raised prices in Michigan more than anywhere else. She also linked the Iran war to higher gasoline and diesel prices and questioned mortgage rates above seven percent.
“He’s got a lot to answer for to the people of Michigan,” Benson said.
During the visit, she said her team would speak to voters about lowering costs and creating better-paying jobs. She also pledged to “stand up to anyone, even the President,” who tried to block those plans.
Critics Question Michigan Democrats’ Record After Benson’s Trump Remarks
The criticism quickly turned to which political leaders should answer for Michigan’s economic problems.
“Haven’t Dems run Michigan for the last 8 years?” one user asked. Another questioned the state’s energy policies, writing, “Why has the cost of energy skyrocketed under Whitmer? Why do we have one of the highest gas taxes in the country?”
Others challenged Benson’s argument about mortgage rates. “What does interest rates have to do with Trump? He is on record wanting it lower,” one response stated. Another brought up inflation under the previous administration, writing, “I remember what inflation was like under four years under Biden and the Democrats!”
Not all responses opposed Benson. One user wrote, “We need leaders like @JocelynBenson and Dr. @AbdulElSayed who fight to lower costs.”
Another expressed skepticism about Trump’s willingness to answer her questions, stating, “He will just lie!”
It remains unclear whether Trump will address Benson’s questions about tariffs, fuel prices, and mortgage rates during his Michigan visit.
