A couple in Kentucky shared a video on TikTok wherein they were suddenly approached by police who subsequently detained them. During the confrontation, the couple wasn’t given probable cause.
Posted by TikTok user E3.dubb, the driver in the incident, she writes on TikTok that she and her boyfriend had met up for lunch break. “I seen the police officer get out but I didn’t think he was coming to bother us,” she says, claiming the Kentucky police officer was pounding “extremely hard” on the back of her car window.
E3.dubb says she was then subjected to numerous questions, which she refused to answer because the officer “couldn’t tell me how I wasn’t ‘complying.’”
In her TikTok video, the police officer orders E3.dubb to stand at the back of her car, but she refuses, saying the officer doesn’t have “probable cause.” The officer threatens her with handcuffs. Her boyfriend chimes in, saying she “didn’t do nothing.”
The officer continues demanding E3.dubb stand at the back of the car, and she repeats, “I know my rights.” The officer then has his partner remove her boyfriend from the car, and he claims he was “reaching for something.” E3.dubb’s boyfriend says otherwise.
The two are then detained by the police officers, with E3.dubb objecting and her boyfriend continuing to record. According to E3.dubb on TikTok, the officer accused her of having a stolen vehicle, but went nowhere. They let them go, but before leaving, they told the couple they would be “walking away with citations.”
Viewers share their outrage and urge the couple to get a lawyer
After the Kentucky police handled the couple this way, TikTok users flocked to E3.dubb’s video to argue her rights were violated and that the next step is to seek a lawyer. “Get a civil rights attorney 💯 Sue both officer’s and sue the city 💯,” one of the top commenters urged.
One viewer blamed E3.dubb, arguing she should “stop trying to argue with him and complain” and let the officer “finish his job.” This prompted numerous TikTok users to call out the OP. “Keep licking that boot,” said one, while another told OP to “stop accepting a police state.”
Others insisted E3.dubb had no reason to comply, since the police officer didn’t have probable cause. Viewers brought up the fact the other cop lied about E3.dubb’s boyfriend reaching for a weapon. “So just bend over & bow & cower because a cop says so?! No thank you! I will 💯% be asserting my [expletive] rights, pal.”
Another TikTok user placed some of the blame on President Trump: “Every Since Trump Been In Office This What He Approved.. That’s Why They Doing This So Openly 😡.” Though several commenters agreed, it was pointed out it was happening long before cameras. “It’s just being recorded for everyone to see,” said a commenter.
If E3.dubb pursues legal action, she would argue that her Fourth Amendment rights were violated. However, she has not made it clear whether she will, but she has liked several comments on TikTok recommending a lawyer and filing a formal complaint.
