A woman in Michigan discovered that her late husband had lied about some unpaid loan debts, leaving her in a difficult financial situation. In a sort of payback, she decided to, among many other things, store his ashes inside a doghouse she will model after Snoopy’s.
Katie MacLean-Peters shared her plans online. She is the founder of Undercover Kindness Gnomes, a nonprofit whose goal is to share “anonymous acts of kindness” via felted gnomes. Recently, her husband of 12 years, Dave, passed away, and one of the ramifications of his passing is explained in the clip above. It garnered 623,600 views, 81,900 likes, and more than 4,800 comments in a day.
The Michigan woman, holding her husband’s ashes stored in a box that has remained in the back of her car for five weeks, said that he had left her in a “big, old mess.” The said mess, she added, could be forgivable, if only it hadn’t been intentional.
What was this mess all about? According to her, Dave left her with two cars that had “enormous loan sizes on them” that were supposedly paid off. They weren’t. She described her mindset as feeling sad, angry, heartbroken, and betrayed.
Doghouse and Bug
Katie, however, chose to pursue joy. First off, he contacted a friend of hers to build a Snoopy-style doghouse where she would store Dave’s ashes.
“It’s gonna look like Snoopy’s doghouse, but it’s gonna say Dave, and he’s gonna live in that doghouse,” the Michigan woman said.
Next up: the cars. According to her, both vehicles were going back to the bank shortly. Therefore, she needed a car of her own. This time, she would get to choose the car, something she had been unable to do. And her pick was going to be a personal one.
“I’m going to look at a Volkswagen Bug,” Katie said. “It has a manual transmission. I know. He’d be so pissed. And you know what I’m gonna do? I’m taking him with me. I am. He’s gonna sit in the seat. He’s gonna be buckled in. And I am taking his everlasting, ethereal soul to a place that I know is gonna make him mad.”
Reaction
Katie’s pettiness, arguably justified, sparked many responses, mainly from viewers who supported her all the way. One said, “So what you’re saying is we need a post-bucket list for Dave.” Another one commented, “I just got dropped off here, so I don’t know the details. But I am obsessed. You are a queen.”
Others commented on Katie’s overall demeanor. One asked, “What stage of grief is this?” Some even shared their own ash-related stories. One wrote, “My Aunt did this! She dumped my uncle’s ashes out of a helicopter over the ocean because he hated water and he hated to fly.”
Katie promised to keep her followers updated on the car and doghouse. She then grabbed Dave’s ashes, looked at the camera, and said, “Say goodbye, Dave.”
