Michigan Governor Candidate John James Draws Attention After Nicki Minaj Praises Trump: ‘What Did They Promise You?’

And on social media, too

Rapper Nicki Minaj is drawing attention to Michigan’s gubernatorial race after praising Republican candidate John James and Florida Republican Byron Donalds for their potential to make political history. Her comments have sparked divided reactions, with some celebrating the possibility of two Black Republicans becoming governors while others criticize her support for President Donald Trump and question the candidate’s political positions.

Minaj shared these thoughts on X, responding to a different post that suggested that James and Donalds could achieve a historic milestone if elected. However, her enthusiastic message quickly attracted criticism, including from a self-described lifelong Michigan resident who made it clear that Minaj’s praise would not influence her vote.

I felt this on a deeply maternal level. Those of us who have eyes to see will celebrate them. I’ve met them both. They are both exceptionally engaging speakers & just overall great well rounded guys. Thank you, President TRUMP! We appreciate you. Mike Rogers is exceptional, too. https://t.co/BJ3HkDTe4Y

The discussion began when a user on X highlighted the possibility of James and Donalds becoming the first Black governors of Michigan and Florida, respectively. The original post also accused the media of overlooking their candidacies because both politicians are Republican, although it offered no evidence establishing that political affiliation was responsible for any lack of coverage.

Minaj responded by saying the prospect resonated with her on a deeply maternal level, explaining that she has personally met both candidates and found them to be engaging speakers. She also thanked President Trump and praised Mike Rogers, adding another prominent Republican figure to a message that supporters interpreted as an endorsement of the party’s candidates.

The possibility of two Black Republican governors being elected in the same year has become a major talking point among those celebrating the candidates’ campaigns. However, neither James or Donalds has won the governorship, meaning the historical significance discussed in the original post remains a potential outcome rather than an accomplished milestone.

Beyond the historical discussion, Minaj’s comments have also brought renewed attention to the political disagreements surrounding Trump and his supporters. While some people welcomed her willingness to praise Republican candidates, others accused her of overlooking policy concerns and using her celebrity platform to promote politicians they strongly oppose.

Comments and Reactions to Nicki Minaj’s Support for Michigan and Florida Republicans

Several supporters celebrated the possibility of James and Donalds making history, arguing that their candidacies deserve greater recognition regardless of political affiliation, with one commenter writing, “NEVER IN US HISTORY — Never in the history of the United States have 2 Black Americans been elected Governor of 2 different States in the same year, regardless of party! THE BEST PART is they are BOTH REPUBLICANS! LFG 🇺🇸.”

Others were considerably less enthusiastic, with one self-described lifelong Michigan resident rejecting the idea of supporting James and writing, “I am a an African American lifelong Michigan resident and will not be voting for him. He endorses everything Trump does which includes getting our country in a war for him to profit from. He could care less that groceries and gas are crazy high. He could care less that Trump is racist and sexist who again is supporting child rape. Neither of those Black men are even close to being like Obama.“

Some responses shifted their attention from the candidates to Minaj herself, accusing the rapper of becoming too closely associated with Trump and questioning her motivations. “Get off the Republikkkan plantation you fool. What did they promise you? You’re a disgrace,” wrote one commenter.

As the topic continues to go viral, commenters continue to leave their opinions in the replies below the original post.
