‘Black Is Not a Job Qualification’: Hakeem Jeffries’ Path to First Black Speaker Draws Skepticism While Campaigning in New York’s Hudson Valley

Race as the main story?

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries spoke with MS NOW’s Ali Vitali while campaigning in New York’s Hudson Valley alongside Democrat Cait Conley, who is challenging Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York. Jeffries said Democrats are confident they can win back the House majority, which could position him to become the first Black Speaker of the House, though he stressed the need to stay focused on the election itself. Online users reacted to the interview by questioning whether race should factor into discussions of the role.

MS NOW EXCLUSIVE: Jeffries 'confident' in Democrats wins in competitive midterm races

In the footage, Democrat Cait Conley introduces Jeffries to the crowd as “Speaker Jeffries,” a title he does not yet hold. Jeffries expresses confidence that Democrats will win back the House, stating that “what we’re thinking about right now is winning every single seat in front of us that’s competitive.” When the conversation turns to the speakership, he says, “we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” and adds that the focus must stay on “what’s in front of us. And what’s in front of us is November 3.”

He also addresses the historic possibility, quoting the late Rep. John Lewis as saying, “Keep your eye on the prize,” and adding, “It means a lot to me that I stand on his shoulders and the shoulders of so many incredible legends, like Shirley Chisholm.”

The MS NOW report notes, based on the interview, that Jeffries is reluctant to discuss the speakership or the prospect of becoming the first Black Speaker, preferring to keep attention on election results. The video does not show Jeffries claiming the role on the basis of race or making it a central campaign theme; that framing appears mainly in surrounding coverage and in some online comments.

How Viewers Are Responding to the Interview

Some viewers focused on the historic possibility, while others questioned whether race should be part of the discussion at all. One commenter wrote, “Black is an immutable characteristic, not a job qualification.”

Another asked, “Again, what does being black matter for that role?” A third said, “He isn’t qualified.”

Others pushed back on that framing. One user noted that members already refer to him as “Speaker Jeffries” and expressed support for Democratic gains in competitive districts like New York’s 17th.

Another wrote that a Democratic majority would mean “we will begin to end the madness” under current leadership, highlighting the chance for change.

Additional comments mixed the two. One said Jeffries “needs to slow his role” and that Democrats need “someone with a backbone,” while another simply stated, “Let’s make sure Hakeem Jeffries never touched the speaker gavel.”

For now, the interview has become part of a wider online conversation about Jeffries’ potential speakership. Viewers remain divided over whether to focus on election results and competitive races or on the historic nature of the role.
