‘Is Tennessee Some Kind of MAGA Trash Bin?’ Fury as Pete Hegseth Reportedly Eyes Senate Exit From Impeachment Fight

The great escape

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is reportedly eyeing a Tennessee Senate seat as a possible escape hatch from impeachment, and some Tennesseans have responded with a question brutal enough to double as a state political slogan: “Is Tennessee some kind of MAGA trash bin?”

HuffPost, citing reporting from Puck, said Hegseth is “angling” for Sen. Marsha Blackburn to appoint him to her Senate seat if she wins the Tennessee governor’s race.

Blackburn’s current Senate term runs through January 2031, so winning the governor’s race could create a valuable Washington vacancy. Hegseth, whose family established residence in Tennessee in 2022, is reportedly interested. Rep. Tim Burchett is also said to be considering the seat.

The timing is difficult to ignore. Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie has filed an impeachment resolution against Hegseth, accusing the defense secretary of waging war against Iran without congressional approval, failing to minimize civilian casualties and using unauthorized lethal force against suspected drug-smuggling boats.

The House is reportedly expected to consider the resolution after the election, with the vote potentially close.

The Pentagon has flatly rejected the speculation, calling the claims “nothing more than beltway gossip by anonymous sources.”

Liberal Tennessee Isn’t Rolling Out The Welcome Mat

If Hegseth really does see Tennessee as his next political destination, the reception on Nashville’s left-leaning subreddit suggests not everyone is thrilled about becoming the landing zone.

The thread’s most popular reaction cut straight to the point: “Is Tennessee some kind of MAGA trash bin?”

Another commenter, describing themselves as a longtime Tennessee resident, replied that the state had indeed become one, while another wrote: “Sure seems like it.”

Others turned their frustration toward Tennessee’s political structure. One Nashville-area commenter argued that gerrymandering had weakened Democratic voting power in cities including Nashville and Memphis. Another said they still vote despite believing Democratic ballots have little influence under the current maps.

The reaction wasn’t aimed solely at Hegseth. Much of the anger reflected a broader fear among left-leaning residents that Tennessee has become an increasingly attractive destination for nationally prominent conservatives looking for their next political foothold.

That is what makes the reported Senate maneuver bigger than one potential appointment. For Hegseth, Tennessee could represent an escape route from an ugly impeachment fight. For his critics inside the state, that possibility looks less like political opportunity and more like Tennessee once again being asked to absorb somebody else’s MAGA baggage.

Whether Blackburn wins the governorship, whether Hegseth actually pursues the seat, and whether impeachment advances are all unresolved.

But the local message is already considerably clearer; some Tennesseans are tired of their state being treated like the Republican Party’s spare chair.
