‘They Want These Voices Silenced’: North Carolina Students March to Vote After Officials Deny Campus Polling Site

Where there’s a will, there’s a way

Students at a North Carolina university aren’t letting a rejected polling site stand in the way of casting their votes. After election officials denied an on-campus early voting location at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, the nation’s largest Historically Black College or University (HBCU), students took matters into their own hands, marching to an off-campus polling station to make their voices heard. And they weren’t about to go quietly, either, with a marching band joining the procession.

According to WFDD, hundreds of students took to the streets of Greensboro on October 22, making the roughly 45-minute journey to the nearest early voting location at Union Square. Leading the way was the university’s Blue and Gold Marching Machine, bringing plenty of noise and energy to the demonstration. Students were also joined by actress Marsai Martin and Love Island USA star Trinity Tatum, while chants of “Bring our polls back” rang out as the group reached its destination.

Notably, the decision has sparked a wider debate over voting access in North Carolina, particularly among younger voters. Republican members of the Guilford County Board of Elections opposed adding an on-campus polling location, while Democrats supported the proposal. Critics argue that the decision makes voting unnecessarily difficult for students, many of whom don’t have reliable transportation. However, election officials have pointed out that the university has never hosted an early voting site during a midterm election, despite having one in 2024.

For students in Greensboro, the impact goes beyond political disagreements. Getting to a polling station can mean finding transportation, taking time away from classes, or juggling work commitments. These challenges are especially difficult for students without cars or money to pay for a ride. Thankfully, local organizers have stepped in to help, arranging free shuttle services to make voting more accessible. Still, many students believe casting a ballot shouldn’t require jumping through so many hoops.

North Carolina Students’ Voting March Sparks Fierce Online Debate

The students’ determination has sparked plenty of discussion online, with many Reddit users praising their efforts while questioning the decision to deny an on-campus early voting site. One commenter argued, “That’s the point! They want these voices silenced,” while another declared, “So proud of those kids.” Others were particularly impressed by the marching band’s involvement, with one user writing, “They didn’t just march…..they brought the fire.” Another summed up the atmosphere with a simple “This gives me hope!!!!“

However, not everyone agreed with the criticism surrounding the polling arrangements. One Reddit user pointed out, “There has never been an early voting site for mid-term elections on the campus of NC A&T,” adding that students have access to a free shuttle and an on-campus polling location on Election Day. Another commenter was less sympathetic, dismissing the demonstration as “Performative protests.” Despite the disagreement, the students’ march has certainly got people talking about voting access in North Carolina.

For now, the students have made it clear that a longer journey won’t stop them from casting their ballots. Whether their efforts lead to changes in future elections remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain: they’re determined to make their voices heard.
