Jay-Z is heading into Super Bowl 61 with plenty of confidence and apparently no concerns about the enormous expectations surrounding his halftime performance. The rapper notably picked himself for the coveted California gig, and he seems perfectly happy with that decision, even laughing off any notion of pressure.
During an ambush street interview on Tuesday, October 27, Jay-Z was asked whether he felt pressure to deliver a memorable show when millions of viewers tune in for the NFL’s biggest event. The music mogul smiled and laughed, verbally stating that he wasn’t worried about the challenge.
When asked how he planned to prepare, Jay-Z suggested the halftime show would be business as usual rather than an extraordinary undertaking. The relaxed response comes just one day after he officially announced himself as the headliner for Super Bowl LXI, scheduled for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The decision puts the Grammy-winning artist in an unusual position. Since Roc Nation partnered with the NFL in 2019, Jay-Z has helped shape the halftime show lineup and select its performers. Now, he’s stepping into the spotlight himself.
The announcement follows a busy year for the rapper, who celebrated the anniversaries of his albums Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint with performances throughout 2026. He also recently performed two shows at SoFi Stadium, giving him another opportunity to become familiar with the venue ahead of the Super Bowl. Whether he will bring out collaborators or surprise guests remains unclear. The NFL has yet to announce additional performers.
Critics Are The Ones Applying Pressure
However, Jay-Z’s apparent lack of nerves hasn’t stopped social media users from weighing in on his self-selection. One commenter joked, “99 problems but a superbowl aint one,” referencing the rapper’s famous hit. Another suggested the performer had little reason to worry, writing, “If he sucks, he’s not gonna fire himself.”
Some of Jay-Z’s most vigilant critics were less enthusiastic about the announcement. “Good time to go walk the dog at Halftime,” one user wrote, while another simply declared, “Straight SNOOZE Fest.” The choice also sparked criticism from people who viewed the decision as self-serving. One commenter called it “insanely narcissistic” for Jay-Z to use his position selecting halftime performers to choose himself.
Others questioned why the rapper was chosen at all, with one bluntly asking, “Why? Really, why him?” Despite the online backlash, Jay-Z appears unfazed by the criticism. With months remaining before the big game, the rapper has plenty of time to prepare a show that could silence his doubters or give them even more to discuss.
