Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley called abortion care essential health care while condemning Republican-backed restrictions across the United States. She accused Republicans of using Christian scripture to justify legislation she said endangered women’s lives. Her remarks drew criticism on X from opponents who challenged her position and cited biblical teachings against abortion.
In a video circulating on X, Pressley described women carrying dead fetuses until their health began to fail. She blamed Republican legislation, calling it “sloppy and fatal” and arguing there was “nothing Christian about it.” She then declared, “Let me be clear, abortion care is essential health care.”
Beyond criticizing Republicans, Pressley called for Democratic legislation to protect and expand abortion access nationwide. She urged lawmakers to codify abortion rights, protect access to birth control and IVF, and improve maternal health outcomes. She also emphasized cooperation across different levels of government and support for women organizing local assistance efforts.
Turning to her broader vision, Pressley called for an America where mothers receive support and children enjoy their childhoods. She also highlighted families struggling to afford necessities such as formula and diapers. “We have to work to make it so,” she concluded.
Ayanna Pressley Faces Backlash Over Abortion Care and Scripture Remarks
Pressley’s remarks sparked criticism on X, with responses challenging her interpretation of Christianity, her definition of health care, and her proposed legislation.
“Thou shalt not kill,” one user wrote, citing the biblical commandment. Another challenged her description of abortion as medical care, stating, “Having an abortion is not healthcare if both the mother and the unborn baby are not in danger.”
The discussion also turned to whether the federal government should regulate abortion. One response argued, “the convo of reproduction SHOULD NOT BE A FEDERAL MANDATE BUT IN THE HANDS OF VOTERS AT STATE LEVELS!”
Meanwhile, a separate commenter questioned her vision for children’s futures, asking, “So you want abortions and childhoods?”
Pressley called for stronger federal protections but did not identify a specific bill during her remarks. The timing and scope of any proposed legislation remain unclear.
