A dispute over who should be allowed to wear a police badge in Illinois has erupted after the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin accused Governor J.B. Pritzker of putting residents in danger. In a post on X, Mullin condemned an Illinois law permitting certain noncitizens to apply for police positions, claiming that the state was allowing people who are in the country illegally to serve as armed law enforcement officers.

The accusations quickly attracted attention from comments demanding federal intervention, with some calling for Pritzker to face criminal charges over the policy. However, others challenged Mullin’s description of the law, pointing out that lawful permanent residents are not undocumented immigrants and that Illinois requires applicants to meet federal firearm eligibility standards.

Criminal illegal aliens have NO PLACE in our communities — especially on our police forces.

Governor J.B. Pritzker doesn’t just allow violent illegal aliens to terrorize Illinois communities, he allows illegal aliens to work as sworn police officers.

Mullin’s criticism centered on Illinois Public Act 103-0357, which Pritzker signed in July 2023 and which took effect in January 2024. The legislation expanded eligibility for municipal police and sheriff’s department positions to certain noncitizens who are legally authorized to work in the United States, provided they satisfy the other requirements for becoming an officer.

The law also references recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, although their eligibility remains complicated by federal restrictions on firearm possession. Crucially, applicants must be legally permitted to obtain, carry, purchase, or possess a firearm under federal law, meaning the legislation does not simply authorize anyone living in the country illegally to become an armed police officer.

Mullin nevertheless portrayed the police as a serious threat to public safety, accusing Pritzker of prioritizing immigrants over American citizens. In his post, he wrote, “Criminal illegal aliens have NO PLACE in our communities — especially on our police forces.”

The controversy reflects a broader disagreement between Illinois officials and the Trump administration over immigration enforcement and the authority of state governments. Supporters of expanding police eligibility argue that qualified legal immigrants should have opportunities to serve their communities, while opponents maintain that law enforcement positions should be reserved for American citizens.

Comments and Reactions to Markwayne Mullin’s Criticism of Illinois Police Hiring

Mullin received support from commenters who opposed allowing noncitizens to serve as police officers, with several arguing that citizenship should be a basic requirement to carry a badge. In fact, one user wrote, “Americans will never accept armed foreigners policing our communities. Our government better fix this before the American people do.“

Not everyone accepted Mullin’s characterization of the legislation, however, and one commenter directly challenged his decision to describe eligible applicants as illegal immigrants. Another commenter wrote, “Green card holders are not illegal aliens, moron.“

The dispute has fueled both calls for tougher immigration enforcement and criticism of the federal government’s response. As the topic continues to go viral, users are leaving their opinions in the comments section below the post.
