An Indiana couple was labeled racist after dressing as members of the Ku Klux Klan for Halloween and riding horses around town.
The incident reportedly took place in Huntington and was filmed by a concerned resident. “How the [expletive] are you able to walk around town like that?” she asked as she recorded the couple. Both the man and the woman were riding horses through town while wearing their outfits.
In the video, the man was wearing a white-sheet costume with a pointed hood resembling the traditional attire of a KKK member. The woman, meanwhile, wore a blanket-style hooded outfit without a pointed hood. Both horses also had white sheets draped over them.
Throughout the video, the woman filming continued cursing and expressing disbelief at what she was witnessing. “You have got to be [expletive] kidding me,” she said. The video ended with close-up pictures of the couple and their costumes.
The woman in the couple allegedly explained their costumes by saying, “We were just ghosts of KKK members.” She also reportedly defended herself against accusations of racism by claiming she had “brown friends.” Reports further indicated that police instructed the couple to leave, not because of their costumes, but because they were parading a horse on city streets without a permit.
Adding to the online outrage, some parents reportedly allowed their children to take pictures with the couple despite the racist imagery of their costumes. One post also claimed that the couple told people their horses were “ghosts of a KKK member.”
Another post shared on Facebook identified the couple and revealed that the woman had issued an apology, which she later deleted. One witness who reportedly encountered the couple also claimed that the woman said, “They thought was hilarious because well—duh it was the past and they’ve gotten over it” when referring to their KKK costumes.
The woman later shared a post defending their costumes, writing, “Calling people a ‘wannabe klansman’ or even just flat out trying to say they are members of the KKK is insane over a halloween costume.” Meanwhile, no public statements have been attributed to her partner.
Viewers Slam White Indiana Couple Over Racist Costume
Many viewers online criticized the Indiana couple for wearing costumes associated with the racist history of the Ku Klux Klan. They argued that the couple should be held accountable for their actions. “This is NOT hilarious. They are racists,” one person wrote. Another commented, “Once Trump is gone and MAG dies, these people need to be ostracized permanently from society.”
Others continued criticizing the couple over their choice of Halloween costumes. “These MAGA folks are total morons; not a single one of them has two brain cells to rub together,” one person wrote. Another commented, “The audacity of these people to say they’re not racists whilst wearing a KKK costume.”
The incident highlighted concerns about people wearing costumes associated with racist movements. This is along with the harm such imagery can cause, even when presented as Halloween attire. It also raised questions about how communities should respond when someone chooses to wear an offensive costume in public.
