Outrage erupted online after New York actor Alec Baldwin described life under the Trump administration as a nightmare.
The actor shared a video on Instagram addressing his fans ahead of the midterm elections. He began by discussing life under the Trump administration, saying, “We’ve been in this nightmare. We have been living in this nightmare. For me and my political consciousness, it’s been a nightmare.”
The actor then said, “the beginning of the end of that nightmare is tomorrow,” referring to the midterm elections. He added that voters would go out the following day and “make our first step in the direction we think this country should go in.”
Baldwin described the direction he wanted America to take as one that was more “sane.” He argued that the country currently operated in a way that was “contradictory to all common wisdom” and again repeated that Americans were living in a nightmare.
“We get off that path tomorrow,” Baldwin said. He then described the wait until 2028, when Trump’s term is scheduled to end, as an “eternity.” He ended the video by once again referring to the current situation as a nightmare and saying that he was going to vote.
This was not the first time Baldwin had publicly criticized Donald Trump or his administration. The actor has been a vocal critic of Trump since his first presidential campaign in 2016, when he began impersonating him on Saturday Night Live. In January 2017, Baldwin criticized Trump in an interview with TIME, accusing him of abusing his power and describing him as a malicious person.
Baldwin also spoke out against the Trump administration in March 2017, saying that the White House’s actions had left people worried. In October 2018, he went further by urging voters to use the midterm elections to peacefully “overthrow” the Trump administration through the ballot box. His latest comments therefore continue a longstanding pattern of publicly criticizing Trump’s leadership and political direction.
Viewers Slam New York Actor Alec Baldwin Over Video
Many viewers online expressed outrage over New York actor Alec Baldwin’s comments about the Trump administration. They argued that there was nothing wrong with the current administration and accused the actor of being obsessed with Trump. “Holy eyebags. He looks like [expletive]. TDS is a real condition and it starts to affect your outward appearance, not just your soul,” one person wrote. Another commented, “This guy, he thinks because he can memorize lines and play pretend he’s an expert, nope just a male Karen.”
Others continued criticizing Baldwin over his comments about the Trump administration. One person argued that the actor was out of touch with the struggles faced by ordinary Americans, writing, “Alec Baldwin crying about a ‘nightmare’ from his multi-million dollar mansion while average Americans were struggling with groceries and energy bills is peak Hollywood entitlement. Your political consciousness isn’t suffering, Alec. Your fragile ego is.” Another person claimed that Baldwin was being paid to criticize Trump, saying, “Alec Baldwin receives money for making these statements against Trump. He doesn’t do anything for free.”
Baldwin’s video prompted discussion about the controversy surrounding celebrities who publicly criticize Trump. It also raised questions about whether celebrities should use their platforms to express their political views.
