‘Was He Made in a GOP Lab?’: Backlash as Florida Voters Elect Republican With Alleged White Supremacist Ties and Anti-LGBTQ History

Must be something in the water

Florida voters have elected a Republican whose reported history includes alleged ties to white supremacist groups, calls for executing LGBTQ+ people, and statements condoning slavery, prompting outrage across social media. Their choice of a state representative has also gone viral and sparked debates, especially since the margin was wide, meaning the victory was overwhelming.

Marshall Rawson, 34, defeated Democrat Merrillee Malwitz-Jipson by 36.4 percentage points on Tuesday, November 3, securing a seat in the Florida House of Representatives. However, his victory has drawn attention to a disturbing record detailed in an investigation by Talking Points Memo (TPM), which reported that Rawson previously belonged to the League of the South, a white supremacist and neo-Confederate organisation.

Rawson has said his involvement lasted from 2013 to 2016, describing his activism as opposition to same-sex marriage, “unfettered immigration” and efforts to remove historic monuments. But footage was also reportedly uncovered showing Rawson at the notorious 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, marching alongside neo-Nazis and other white supremacists.

Another video reportedly showed him carrying a League of the South flag, while a photograph placed him near James Alex Fields Jr., who later drove his car into counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer. Rawson was also linked to social media posts that allegedly advocated executing queer people, condoned slavery, and supported public lynchings. One post from an account believed to belong to him stated: “Multiculturalism kills and public lynchings worked.”

Despite the revelations, Rawson has never publicly renounced the organisation or apologised for his past involvement, according to the investigation. TPM contacted 28 current and former Florida Republican officials, including 22 who had endorsed Rawson, asking whether they would condemn his reported views. None agreed to do so.

Critics React to Controversial GOP Victory

Rawson’s election quickly sparked angry reactions on social media, where users questioned how someone with such a record could secure public office. “Was he made in a GOP lab?” one commenter asked, in a remark that inspired plenty of agreement.

Another described the result as “absolutely nauseating,” while a third questioned the Republican Party’s apparent willingness to support candidates with extremist backgrounds. Others turned their attention to Florida’s political direction, with one commenter declaring: “Florida is the new Texas. Except with less electoral votes.”

There were also questions about the lack of support for the Democratic challenger, with one user arguing that Malwitz-Jipson’s performance suggested the state could be more competitive if Democrats invested additional resources. Still, Rawson’s victory has raised broader questions about the Republican officials who backed his campaign and whether his reported history will have any consequences now that he is heading to the state legislature.
