Illinois House Speaker Emanuel Chris Welch recently announced that he will leave his role as caucus leader in 2027. The announcement came soon after what the Illinois Democrat described as a “mutiny,” motivated by his perceived inability to address sexual harassment allegations against former state Rep. Harry Benton.

As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, it became known that Welch knew about the accusations in 2023 but only publicly stopped supporting Benton in 2026, when the case exploded.

Soon after the midterms, the case sparked a “mutiny” among Democratic House members, and 26 of them signed a letter calling for new leadership. One of the main voices leading the movement was State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, who argued that Welch represented an entrenched culture of harassment.

Less than a day after the document was signed, Welch publicly announced that he would leave his positions as House Speaker and party leader in 2027. He reportedly said he was “proud” of his work and that he was looking forward to “joining the caucus as we usher in our next leader and take our party further into the future.”

Illinois Residents Criticize House Speaker Chris Welch

Residents who commented on r/Illinois had some harsh words for Welch following the official announcement. One of them said, “Everyone I’ve talked to on the staffer side is relieved about this, which IMO points to bad people management. (…) Honestly, I’ve been surprised he lasted as long as he did based on staffer gossip; staffer gossip can be ridiculous, but it’s rarely this sustained unless there’s something rotten.”

Others were especially vocal about his inability to deal with these serious allegations: “Welch knew about the allegations for a good measure of time and did nothing, so yeah… good riddance.”

However, some residents pushed back against the idea that Welch did not lift a finger to help the women. One person responded: “Except he did do something. He referred it to the House’s investigators. The problems that people have with him is that he never followed up on those investigations and kind of just let them languish. It’s not a case of he did nothing; it’s a case of people wanted him to have done more.”

With his official resignation from leadership, Democratic members will likely have plenty of time to pick a successor for 2027. It remains to be seen who will step into the role.
