After being pushed forward by Warner Brothers to Nov. 1, 2019, Wonder Woman 1984 has been pushed back to its original date of June 5, 2020. Gal Gadot took to Twitter to break the news to the world saying:

Super excited to announce that, thanks to the changing landscape, we are able to put Wonder Woman back to its rightful home. June 5, 2020. Be there or be square!!!

Subsequently, Warner Bros. issued an official statement as to why the sudden date change for their upcoming sequel. Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution had this to say about the change.

We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs.

This could be in relation to a few upcoming films both within and outside of DC. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was originally set for around the Fall 2019 time frame but is likely being pushed after James Gunn was fired from the project. Joaquin Phoenix’s upcoming Joker film is slated for that fall as well, so DC may be trying to not put too many movies out on top of each other.

This news comes after some rumblings of restructuring within Warner Brothers DC division. Reportedly, the studio is looking to move on from Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman. Could this need for change have had an effect on DC’s upcoming films along with Wonder Woman 1984?

Little is known about Wonder Woman 1984 aside from it’s Cold War setting. A few set photos were shown earlier this year featuring Gal Gadot as Diana and the return of Chris Pines character Steve Trevor. Kristen Wiig will also appear in 1984 as Cheetah. Patty Jenkins will return to direct the upcoming sequel.
