Despite how big AI has become in our daily lives, there are some people who don’t like anything related to this technology, to the point that they shun it. Yet this hasn’t stopped some individuals from using it, and while we can’t say what’s right or wrong about personal use, there are situations where people should avoid AI-generated content. For instance, one community rally in Chicago, Illinois, issued a call to action but allegedly used an AI-generated image, which, instead of rallying people to the cause, has now led potential supporters to stay away from the event.
One user in the Chicago subreddit shared a picture of a community rally poster in Oz Park, aimed at saving Lincoln Park. According to the poster, those organizing the event are trying to raise awareness, as a private school’s expansion threatens the park. It also mentions other things that could threaten the community, such as stadium lights harming those around them, increasing taxes for all people in the city, and even the possibility of some homes being demolished. All in all, this event sounds great, as it is trying to do good for its community, yet people focused on the wrong thing.
According to OP and other Redditors, the image at the bottom of that community in Chicago flyer appears to be AI-generated. Naturally, this turned a lot of people away from the event, which is the exact opposite of what the poster intended in the first place. Several commenters even talked about how AI ends up hurting everything it touches, even if the goal is to do good for others.
Redditors in Illinois Think Using AI For Community Rallies is Not the Way
As you can see from several comments in the Reddit thread, the alleged AI-generated image caused more harm than good, prompting many people to run away from the event rather than join it.
“I feel a deep revulsion to obviously AI-generated images, especially when used in a serious context.“
Many people shared the above sentiment, as many think that when it comes to doing something important, especially for one’s community, AI should be off the table.
“Using AI for this really does so much harm to their cause. All I see is a group of fake people that aren’t part of the community, in a park that isn’t in the community.“
“My God, they have forced me to root for a private school.“
Leaving the AI conundrum aside, there are still some residents who are supporting the cause and will likely attend the event. Yet others would’ve liked to see the organizers avoid the alleged use of AI.
