Despite being announced back in 2017 as a potential release, it’s only now that we’re finally seeing the long-awaited Assassins Creed: Rebellion battles its way onto our mobile screens. This free-to-play strategy adventure was almost forgotten about over the past year, but with a release date for November 21st finally confirmed, the countdown has now begun.
The announcement comes shortly after the release of Assassins Creed: Odyssey, the long-awaited next installment in the AC series, which sees players finally experience the true meaning of personalized play. As you explore the stunningly designed backdrop of Ancient Greece, your every decision ultimately affects how the rest of the story plays out for your Spartan star. However, as with any game release, a single new kid on the block can wipe out the hype and take the limelight so it could only be a matter of time before Odyssey is left to gather dust.
For this reason, Ubisoft’s decision to release Rebellion next month is arguably a smart move for the gaming giant. Despite being a strategy RPG rather than simply an RPG, the game offers some familiar faces, including Ezio, Aguilar, Shao Jun, and more, but most importantly, it offers convenience.
Mobile gaming has proven time and time again that it is a worthy holder of a place in the industry and month on month, we see more and more games producing incredible results. Fortnite alone makes over $2 million a day from its sales and internal purchases, and nearly every single game conceivable, from Monopoly to roulette to Sudoku now has a mobile app with its own variation on the game. What’s more, with augmented reality also bringing us the likes of Pokémon Go and Jurassic World Alive, the mobile has become a key part of the innovative gaming experience and so it’s truly no surprise that so many of us are breaking out our smartphones for a quick fix during our commute.
The convenience, portability, and affordability of mobile-friendly games draws in millions of players each year and as a result, hundreds of developers are making the move to mobile or simply starting up directly on the app stores.
Ubisoft has tried their hand at mobile gaming before, with Assassins Creed even getting its very own action-RPG complete with incredible graphics, customization options, and plenty of entertaining missions to complete. However, Rebellion could offer gamers something entirely new in the coming months. After all, Assassins Creed: Rebellion may have taken over a year to finally get an official release date, and while we do still have a month to wait, we’re eager to see just what Ubisoft have to offer, as they move their popular console and movie franchise to the smaller screen yet again.
Rebellion promises the very same atmospheric style of play that the main titles have given players thus far, but with an undeniably cute, almost Zelda-esque style of play, this game is aimed at far more than just the usual culprits. While the game itself is certainly a celebration of previous titles, all compacted down into a new style of play, gamers who might otherwise have skipped over the console epics, may be drawn in by the unique storyline and adorable graphics, thus helping to grow the audience.
Room-build, micromanage, and strengthen up your brotherhood, as you work your way to attacking Templars and strongholds – while there isn’t much in terms of unique gameplay styles, there is currently no talk of any in-game micropayments, and with this unique art style, what’s not to love?
Set at the height of the Spanish Inquisition in 15th century Spain, we’re treated to a familiar location to fuel that nostalgic sensation that Assassins Creed fans could be beginning to crave. We’re given access to storylines and backgrounds recognizable from the very start of the series, with plenty of opportunities to marvel in and enjoy a franchise that many of us have grown up playing.
Whether Assassins Creed: Rebellion will hold popularity long enough to show Ubisoft the true power of mobile gaming again has yet to be seen, but with the November 21st release date quickly looming, we have just over a month before we find out for ourselves.
