By the Power of Grayskull, the start date and location for the shooting of the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie has been revealed.

The film, which promises to bring He-Man and Co. into a new generation, is due to shoot in Prague this July. This information comes courtesy of website Production Weekly, who tweeted from their Twitter page:

“Updated production schedule and location for Sony’s MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, from the directing duo of Aaron and Adam Nee,” the tweet reads, “Principal photography is due to get underway mid-July in Prague.”

The aforementioned Nee Brothers, Aaron and Adam, were revealed as the film’s directors last April in Variety. While they helm Masters of the Universe, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway will revise the script. This screenwriting duo is perhaps most famous for working on 2008’s Iron Man and Punisher: War Zone. So, at the very least, they are no strangers to writing blockbusters based on popular IPs.

The Nees, on the other hand, are less prolific in the genre. However, they’ve gained considerable success through their movies, The Last Romantic (2006) and Band of Robbers (2016). The brothers got their start in independent filmmaking, which might help differentiate Masters of the Universe tonally from other contemporary blockbusters.

The fact that Masters of the Universe is actually due to shoot is nothing short of miraculous. The movie has been in development hell since 2009 when Sony acquired the rights. Directors and screenwriters have come and gone from the project over the years including McG and David S. Goyer. The journey has been long.

The film reboots the Masters of the Universe franchise on the silver screen. The 1987 attempt starring Dolph Lundgren was a critical and commercial failure. Alongside similar failures Superman IV: The Quest For Peace and Lifeforce, the movie’s fall contributed to the eventual closure of Cannon Films. Lundgren has gone on to describe He-Man as his least favorite film role.

Anyway, here’s hoping the Nee brothers do justice to He-Man and friends!

Are you looking forward to the movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
