In a cinema schedule that reads like the inventory of a comic book store, maybe we need something different. ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ is, maybe, just what we need. Because, while we’ve had movies about reincarnation, we haven’t had one starring a dog yet.

A Dog’s Purpose may have slipped under your radar due to the sea of superhero blockbusters. A novel of the same name is what the movie is being adapted from and follows the lifetimes of a dog called Bailey. The movie’s theme, therefore, is Bailey trying to figure out the purpose of his constant reincarnation. And, along the way, he’ll run into his old owner who needs him again.
In addition, Universal’s website has an official synopsis.
“Based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The 100-Foot Journey), shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The family film told from the dog’s perspective also stars Dennis Quaid, Britt Robertson, K.J. Apa, John Ortiz, Juilet Rylance, Luke Kirby, Peggy Lipton, Pooch Hall and Josh Gad.”
Furthermore, there are potential sequels on the horizon. The book has a sequel called a Dog’s Journey, which covers Bailey’s continuing adventures. The trailer seems like it follows the plot of the book fairly closely. However, in the book, Bailey, isn’t the dog’s first incarnation. It’s not clear if the movie will include this or just cut straight to the chase.
Most of all, it’s just pleasant that we have a breather from the constant superhero blockbusters. Pass the popcorn (and the tissues).
A Dog’s Purpose will hit cinemas on January 27th, 2017.
