Between positive reviews and a major hit at the box office, A24 has greenlit a sequel to Talk to Me. The supernatural horror film was the directorial debut of Australian YouTubers Danny and Michael Philippou, who will return to helm the follow-up. Philippou will also co-write the script with collaborator Bill Hinzman.
The film follows Mia (Sophie Wilde), a grieving teenager who lost her mother two years ago. While her friends try to cheer her up, she convinces her best friend, Jade (Alexandra Jensen), to go to a classmate’s party after videos surfaced on social media of some seemingly supernatural encounters. When they arrive, they are greeted with an embalmed hand that can get in touch with the spiritual world. After too much fun with the hand between parties, they start to see the consequences of the living interacting with the dead.
A24 Greenlights Third Sequel in Studios History With Talk to Me
While A24 has had plenty of successful horror films, Talk to Me defied expectations, leading to this sequel announcement. Between no big names being attached and it being the directorial debut of YouTube stars, the bar was set low for its success. With a budget of $4.5 million, it has grossed over $25 million worldwide. For an R-rated film, it exceeded expectations, especially during its opening weekend when it grossed $10 million, doubling industry predictions. That opening puts it in second place for the biggest wide release from the studio. Hereditary holds the number one spot with Ari Aster’s directorial debut opening to $13.6 million.
The sequel to Talk to Me is the third sequel from the studio. The first was the 2019 film The Souvenir, which earned a Part II in 2021. The other was last year’s X, which had a prequel the same year, Pearl. A third film to complete the trilogy called MaXXXine is in the works. No date has been slated for the third film in Ti West’s trilogy with Mia Goth.
Talk to Me is in theaters, so you can see for yourself why critics and audiences have been gushing over this fresh and terrifying take on the supernatural horror genre.
