Warner Bros. Discovery just inked a deal with the film industry’s biggest indie darling. A24 movies will now be available on Max and HBO after a multi-year deal has been signed. The films will still be getting theatrical runs, but when it goes to streaming, we can expect it to hit Max, HBO, and Cinemax.
The deal will encompass previously released films and recent releases. Some of the pics from this year include Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, the Nicolas Cage-led Dream Scenario, and the boxing film The Iron Claw with Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White. Films that dig deeper into the studio’s history include Lady Bird, The Whale, Uncut Gems, and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
A24 Movies Head to Max and HBO After Theatrical Runs
The indie studio has gotten big in recent years. Successes in horror like Talk to Me and Hereditary cemented a foundation in the genre for fans seeking fresh ideas. It has also pleased the Academy Awards with Ladybird and Everything Everywhere All at Once. Now, the studio is seeking to go bigger with new deals and potentially bigger-budgeted projects from established IP.
The WBD deal with A24 to bring its movies to services like Max comes off the heels of a 2019 deal with Paramount and Showtime. That previous deal brought the indie studio’s movies to Showtime and Paramount Plus after theatrical runs. The Paramount deal ended last month on November 1. Now, Warner Bros. is digging into the success of the rising indie studio.
A24 has plenty of movies coming that will inevitably hit Max. The studio has a diverse roster of projects in the coming years. Some of what we can expect in 2024 include Ti West’s Maxxxine and Alex Garland’s Civil War. It’s also developing a sequel to Talk to Me, a surprise hit from earlier this year that grossed $91 million from a $4.5 million budget.
