Alicia Vikander confirms that the 2018 Tomb Raider sequel is still a work in progress. Vikander, who plays Lara Croft, told Collider, “Pre-COVID, I would’ve said yes. And now I think it’s a yes still. It’s not greenlit, but the script is in the making. And I think everyone is excited, and I would love to revisit Lara again.”

Vikander also noted that the script completion for the 2018 Tomb Raider’s sequel is a new development. She then goes on to say, “It’s [the script] very recent. It’s really now when the world is up and running again, and Misha is on board and she’s working on the script right now. So I’m very excited to sort of read something very soon.”

The actress expressed interest in the reprised role before the first Tomb Raider had even been released. She then confirmed that if there was ever an audience for the movie, she would love to keep doing it.

Tomb Raider 2018 and the Pandemic

The sequel was originally announced in September of 2019. Amy Jump and Ben Wheatley were confirmed to write and direct the film respectively. Due to the pandemic, however, MGM removed the film from their calendar and it was delayed indefinitely.

Before the pandemic, the film was planned to debut on March 29, 2021. In January, Misha Green then took on the role of replacing Jump and Wheatly following their leave. May had Green teasing that she finished the first draft of the film, titled Tomb Raider: Obsidian. In the post, Green captions “Still a long journey to production. Title’s not even approved. But the first draft finished!”

The original Tomb Raider was released in 2018. The film, starring Vikander, adapted the events from 2013’s Rise of Tomb the Raider game. The film fostered mixed reviews from audiences but had a worldwide total of $274.7 million. Currently, the film has no timeline for release.
